Well I’m going to clue you in..... notice only the valves I have circled are countersunk in the head? I’m going to explain why.....

My buddy has a Shaker with a N14, it got to where when you cracked the throttle hard it would pop and crack through the exhaust. He ask my opinion and I told him it may have a couple valves not seating good, I really didn’t know. Well since he had a driver coming to fill the seat he wanted it right!

We both tore into it and got the heads off, I honestly was baffled when I seen these valves. I told him hey I’m going to phone a Freind lol...... so I called my Dad. I went and got dad and brought him to the shop. Now keep in mind Dad is one of the true mechanics that diagnosed engine problems by sound, sight, feel, and minimal gauges.

We walked in the shop and had a typical BS session before getting serious. Dad looked at the heads and ask my buddy a few questions then responded with...... my bet is, that engine is out of time. My buddy was like huh!!o_O Can’t be!!

    Well long story short.......

The original engine (525hp) had blown up and he replaced the long block with a good low mileage used engine that was (370hp). He installed the engine and added all the original wiring along with injectors, & computer for the (525).....

The 370 & 525 N14 use different settings on the injector timing, so yes, it was out of time for a 525hp engine. So we pulled the camshaft and got another Freind (retired Cummins man) to change the key on the camshaft for him..... he has the proper tools at his house, oven / press.

We installed the cam, got everything ready and our Freind came back with his injector timing tool, got the proper gaskets on the cam follower housings and installed new heads along with a inframe kit.

Truck is still running perfect other than one injector gave him problem.

So here’s my point to you my Freind.....

You can tune it as @jamespmack mentioned, but if someone tells you to throw a different computer on it and get 500+ ponies out of it, well, just think about this personal experience I have shared with you here.....,

Saw this yesterday near Lund WY. I never did get under it until Rapid City hours later. I was hardly even rained on.

I've thought about that route several times over the last several months, but the rates over here are somewhere between the toilet and the sewer main. Stepdeck is no better though. Be like trying to trade #### for manure.

Oh yeah I don't blame you. We only used the warranty once for the coil packs when he first got it because we didn't know of the issues with them. Now we keep six in inventory and just swap 'em out. It went in this time for a fuel leak, which they covered, and we'll do the rest. I was just shocked at the price for the belt. I mean that's big truck price for a serpentine belt for a car.
