Meanwhile, my diesel bimmer is sitting parked on expired tags because I can't renew it without ca smog, which is autofail due to CEL from SCR codes...

If you're planning on buying a deleted truck from someone, you better be a master mechanic and prepare to do all the work yourself. The dealers won't touch them and independent shops that work on Volvos are few and far between.

 

I quit caring and paying any attention to what Cali was doing when they dreamed up that law.
The next time my trucks came up for registration I omitted Cali from my cab card, even though I still legally had several years I could run them there.

In the late 70's I tried living in that place. I had a new pickup, but I had headers and dual exhaust, nobueno in Cali. I drove it back to Texas with expired tags, and never looked back.
