Anyone can suffer from sleep apnea, although overweight males are most commonly afflicted. We have a gal at work that's not overly heavy that was just diagnosed, so, like I say, anyone can suffer from it. Go to your Dr. and talk to him about it. If it's suspected, you'll undergo a sleep study where they'll monitor you all night. They woke me up halfway through and put me on cpap after I stopped breathing a couple hundred times.
panhandlepat Thanks this. -
YES!!... google sleep apnea.. there are lots of sites that you can take a quick quiz and see if you have enough symptoms of sleep apnea to justify a sleep study.
-
Lets not confuse sleep apnea with insomnia, these are two different issues. However, a person could be diagnosed with both.

that doesn't sound like a very thorough test to me i had mine done in march and they had wires hooked to my head ,chest, arms and legs. they also had audio and visual. was like 20 wires
they could tell if you were dreaming , eye movement, breathing, heartbeat etc i had to go 2 times once to get diagnosed then the second time with the machine to get the correct pressure while sleeping and also to try different mask configurations (i went thru 5 before i found one i could sleep all night with)
. i'm sure with the "popularity" of sleep apnea lately there will be scamers. doctors that will take a little course and then get referral money from the labs and machine manufacturers
getting proper treatment is important not just a radio shack recorder in your truck for 1 night "yea you got it heres a machine we'll bill your ins. co $3500.00 "
up untill i was in the hospital overnight for a different reason i never knew how serious this can be.
it can be a minor condition for some people but can be a major health concern for others as it can cause other problems up to and including death. (a guy up the road from me died in march he knew he had it as the doctor told him but he refused treatment)
my doctor was concerned enough that i recieved a pacemaker for insurance so my heart won't stop while sleeping (thats what happened to the guy up the road) if i wasn't using the machine for whatever reason i have no heart problems but during my test i stopped breathing over 100 times in 6 hours and my heart had slowed down from a normal 75-100 beats a minute to as low as 25 from lack of oxegen from stopping breathing
so i don't think a truckstop clinic is the correct way to go imho but its your lifeLast edited: Jun 9, 2009

i have a resmed escape II with humidifier and it also has a memory card slot to prove compliance. the resmed units are conciderd the top of the line and they are very quiet and automatically reduces the pressure when you exhale it works on 12 volts but you must buy the resmed power cord for like $80 bucks

Many do know they need the sleep study and many do not know they need it. The ones who know they need it don't know because they wake up when they stop breathing but because they wake up as tired or more tired than when they went to bed.

If you are looking for more information about sleep apnea or specifics on CPAP's etc.
Check out the ASAA (American Sleep Apnea Association) web site. They have a forum system not unlike this. But its all other Sleep Apnea patients with questions on everything from how do you keep the condensation out of your hose.. to running a CPAP while camping.
One study I read had at least 15% of the truck drivers who tested positive for sleep apnea had a BMI less than 30.
My brother has sleep apena.. and he is skinny as a rail... Being heavy is "risk factor" for sleep apnea... just like smoking is a risk factor for lung cancer.
