Hello everybody, Looking for some feed back on issuse of local sheriff doing DOT stops. I recently had a stop by a small town shreiff, he gave me a level 2 inspection. I have been through many inspections in the past and this officer either had no clue or i was his first stop. I drive a medium duty truck. (hyd brakes) He was doing the regular walk around until he looked under the back of the truck at the rear end inside of the wheels etc, then did the same on the front. Then proceeds to tell me to"pump the brakes down until the low pressure buzzed sounds" I asked him if he had noticed that this truck did not have air brakes, he said he did not notice. Am i correct in thinking this officer might not be trained or certified to do DOT stops? Is there a way to find out if local cops are certified to do these road side stops. Thanks all be safe.

He will have a DOT patch on his uniform and DOT certification which has to be renewed annually. If in doubt, call the state patrol or a higher ranking law enforcement and watch them burn him.

Ty for the feedback, i still have the inspection paperwork i just might check into that.

Quite a few of the local and county officers in the area i live are DOT certified inspectors but they know what they are doing. I would be questioning him as well.

Often, they will stop you to check your paperwork, insurance, registration, permits, and such.
It does sound like he didn't have a clue, kind of like many don't have a clue with logbooks. Plenty of advice on the thread. -
I don't even have a DOT patch on my uniform. Yes, some local departments have gone through the training.
Lymie, you may have got a newbie, or a dumb A $ $, not like it makes a difference. Did you get a electronic or handwritten inspection? If electronic (done on the computer) it will have a telephone number on the top. What State was it done in? -
sounds like you were the victim of a blatent case of legalized extortion. Expect to see more of that garbage as more state and local gov'ts go broke!
I've said it before they (the gov't) views us as 18 wheel atm's.
Pretty soon, it's gonna be illegal to be a truckdriver. but we'll just pay a fine and be let go to be caught again tommorow. -
It was a computer print out rite from his mobil unit, NY was the state.

My guess is this, if he had the ASPEN program on his computer, which is the CMV inspection program, he must be certified. They don't put that on everyone's computers. Then again I may be wrong but I doubt it. -
Then it's Legit(Legal)
