Seems kind of nuts to risk a $250k fine instead of just buying a brand new compliant truck for $150k. Or even a legal well used one for $40k.

Then why do they never even give me a glance in FL? I'm not arguing, I'm truly curious. I don't go there much but every time I do I wait in a long line at the checkpoint and they don't even look up at me. The officer just seems to have his hand up in the air waving constantly while he looks at Facebook or whatever. How could he know what I'm hauling in my dry van if he doesn't even ask?

Not sure, I never haul to Florida. California they ask to see your BOL and verify what you're hauling. If any fruits, veggies or other things that are organic in nature, they have to stamp your BOL and sometimes they may want to take a look, and yes break the seal. Although that's extremely rare.

Them big check guys in Cali sure do not have much of a sense of humor. One ask me what I had on, and I told him the truth, it could be anything between rubbers and riding mowers. lol He acted like I had just slept with his mother. lol

Poor DOT critters, sitting around talking aint it.

They can visit outlaw forums... and read all about how to catch outlaws in the wild.

    HAHAHAHA.

One time long ago they asked me that whats in box?

    Big Secret.

Fess up, what is in box or we find out from your BOL. (BOL Contains weight around 18000 nothing else of value)

    *&^%

Hauled me into small office. This time three stood around me, whats in dat box?

    Pokemon.

    Silence in heaven 30 minutes.

All three started chattering about the coming holidays and what of the newest toys and goodies in by box to get to their kids.

I sat there mentally writing out a last will because by the time I show up empty to customer toy distribution it's going to be necessary to end life as I knew it.

Can't speak for owner op and choosing your own load, but I wouldn't be surprised if like people who fail at leasing, money and time management is the prime reason for going under. There is a reason the average American has over 100k in debt and it isn't due to great money management skills. Many people try to live beyond their means because they get credit cards and see all the money they (don't) have available to spend and splurging on personal luxuries becomes a priority over saving for unplanned major expenses and paying back loans and credit cards.
