My husband drove for 18 years until he had to go on insulin. We have been trying to find any Endocrinologists that are familiar with the Diabetes Waivers and the paperwork. We are in Decatur, Il. and can't find a Dr. within 50 miles that wants to mess with it. He has been cleared on all the other paperwork and Dr.'s but the Endo's part. Any suggestions or Dr.'s in Central Il. that anyone has dealt with?
    Thanks

Why not call or email the FMCSA and see if they have list of endo's that has helped out other drivers in your area? There has got to be one that will...I did a search and found a site that may help...vitals.com and healthgrades.com..Go to the sites and go to the doctor search...One I saw on the site was a Dr. Terry Meriden, MD (Endocrinologist) - Doctor in Peoria Ill ...I used to go through Peoria every weekend 4 times in a row on a plant transfers. Your husband may have to go even farther than 50 miles.. I've spent close to a $1000.00 just trying to get my paperwork done.(This was the doctor fees, tests,etc....) That's not payed yet either. That comes outta my pocket. I wish you and your husband luck with this but the main thing is DON'T give up. Let me know if you would how you make out. Here is a break down of the mileage and time it would take to go to Peoria..Trip distance: 80.17 mi Time: 1 hr 38 mins that was gotten from yahoo maps...I hope this helps...Later

Has his old job agreed to take him back with the proper paperwork or will he be looking for a new one?

I ask because this has come up and the companies right now haven't been kind with exceptions lately. Try to get some info on a conditional prehire before spending any big bucks out of pocket for a special endo.

Thanks to Rerun I will check out those sites. Yea we have already been to Champaign and Springfield which are about 50miles from where we live in Decatur, IL. The Dr.'s seem to have a bad opinion of the DOT. My husband has went off his insulin and is using BYETTA at the present time. The last week his blood sugars have been low, so low he stopped doing the Byetta for three days. Finally the last one he took was high, so he started again. How frustrating.Pharmphail... His old dispatcher where he worked... Continental Carbonic... told him if he could ever drive again to come there. The only problem with that is it is 1 1/2 hours drive to get to work because they moved the trucking part to Pekin, IL. I would rather have him make less money and be closer to home as he doesn't take care of himself when he is away for days at a time. Eats at McDonalds and the such. But I hear all you truckers don't really take care of yourselves when you are out there on the road. Plus... You know how hard it is to get a trucker to change his mind once it is set.... LOL Thanks for the info guys...

Ok here is the biggest problem that I just read that you wrote ... he doesn't take care of himself when he is away for days at a time...First thing is that with this waiver you MUST keep your blood sugars under control plus you must record them all the time plus you must be checked by the doctor plus he must be recert every year...It's a tough row to hoe but if he wants to drive again then he'll do what it takes to keep hiw A1C down....I wish him good luck. Has he gotten a copy of the reg's about the waiver from FMCSA website and read all of it ?

You are so right. When he was on the road and only taking pills he didn't watch anything he ate and had to suffer the consequences of taking the insulin. It has been about a month and he has been taking Byetta and glyburide. It seems to work although sometimes his sugar goes to about 70 and then he doesn't take the shot. (Nurse told him not to). Then when he wakes up it is high. I have been fixing him good things to eat like salads and chicken breast. When he is good it stays down. I really feel sorry for him, but he has to learn to watch it all. He is aware of the hassle of keeping his waiver. This is why he is trying the Byetta, it didn't work before but he wasn't taking care either. Now he does check it at least 2 times a day and watches what he eats He hates the job he does now and has realized that trucking isn't so bad and sure pays a lot better. Thanks for your advice....

The truck stop industry does not have much for the type 1,or 2 trucker or any healthy foods. Most are loaded with sodium, fast food, trucking companys also don,t consider having fitness in corperated into the job.to improve the driver longterm health. we are steering wheel holders.:biggrin_2552:

I have type II - no insulin or meds. Get a refrigerator... you'll have to measure the truck first, then go to Lowes, BestBuy, etc. and get a real fridge. I prefer the kind with a separate freezer compartment - works better that way. Then stock it from a supermarket. WallyWorld has plenty of parking, and many are easy access from a nearby truck route.

Voila! You can eat healthy. The way I figure it, by staying out of the truckstops, the fridge pays for itself in a couple of weeks with the money you save over paying McD's, et al, to kill you.

I am considering trying Byetta myself to control my diabetes. Did it work good while he was OTR with care and control?
