Are there any statistics on how many new hires pass there 90 day mark?
My husbands been with Watkins and Shepherd for 90 days and I was just curious how many other new drivers are still there.. Do you start getting more miles once you prove yourself?
Thanks.![]()

Congrats to you both, I bet its well over 50% dont make it........ but im just guessing.

97.3% of all statistics are made up.
(and that is a 100% useless reply). -
I think a lot of people discover by 3 months time that driving isn't the glamorous job they thought it would be and rather than "not make it" they decide they "don't want to make it". Making a third more money isn't worth the loss of hometime and the normal life to most people while others love the freedom of being out there on your own and somewhat being able to determine your pay by working harder or smarter......sales is about the only other job where your effort directly relates to your income. Like sales, though, your dispatcher and the customer can hold you back and I'd guess they're the biggest factors in what you choose to do if you do stick around.
Of course your boss will want you to take the longer, sometimes tougher loads if you're more experienced. You're better able to get out of a jam and less likely to ditch the truck and take a bus. Longer isn't always better ,though. 600 mile loads in familiar territory have always paid better for me. You drive on auto-pilot, know where not to stop, know the receiver's procedures and time schedule, and know the fast way to the next load. Time lost waiting and wondering is the killer in this business. I've had things line up so well in the midwest that the customer would try to apologize for making me wait an hour and I'd tell them if it wasn't for that, I'd never get a break. The long routes are more of a vacation, but after you've seen everything 10 times, you've had enough of that.
