My fiancee decided about 5 months ago to quit his career and become a trucker. I was 100% behind him because he was really ready for a change and I wanted to see him do something that would make him happy.
So he signed up to go to a school nearby for about 4-6 weeks. He did well, but when his actual test date came, he did not pass the first time. This was really hard on him. Now his whole plan has changed and he insists that he needs to go to another school and then work for them for 6-18 months because there is no way he'll ever get a job without doing that.
I've tried to do as much reasearch as I can, and I was actually able to talk him out of CR England. But from what I see after going to sites like Stevens, Arrow, CR England and Swift, is that these companies offer very expensive "free" training and once you are done, they pretty much own you for the next year or so. I guess I'm a skeptic and I don't believe this is the only route out there for him to take.
Any advice out there from those of you who have "been there, done that" would be great.
Trucker's girlfriend deperately needs some advice!

Your fiancé should first ask the local school if he can re-take their class and use one of their trucks for his road test. They will probably charge him a fee for this, but it would be cheaper than starting all over at square one at a new school.
If the school is unwilling to do this, your fiancé will have to go to another school and pay the full price or sign away his life for the next year to a large trucking company. If he is currently unemployed, he may qualify for a government re-training program. But, they may say no because he "quit" his previous career.

As much as I hate to admit it...its best to suck it up and go with Schneider, JB Hunt, Swift, etc....because with that "not so free" training he'll get something that is hard to come by anywhere else....EXPERIENCE.
Then move on to better companies later (actually Schneider wasn't half bad in my opinion...if they still had a flat bed division I'd still be there)
One more thing...very important.
No matter how bad it gets while he is still under the contract....DO NOT QUIT, if he does he's finished and even after that, when he finds another job he MUST work out a 2 week notice (no matter how pissed he is at them)
Sad but true...thats just the way trucking is. -
One trucking school that I'm aware of, only charges about $1,200 for an individual.
However, if you train to hire with a specific company, and you sign an agreement to stay with them for a year, it is in the contract that you may owe the company up to $5,000, if you quit. That is an agreement I know about.
However, it will give you a year of experience. And to work with some other companies, they require 2 to 3 years of experience. So, it will be a START.
You have to start somewhere, and with experience, doors begin to open. -
Check with the school that he already went to I know that the few that I have looked into will allow you to re-take the skills test if you fail the first time or two. One that I spoke with offered four times to take the test before you had to pay another fee. If he has already done the classes and has the permit then this would be the best option and he would be able to free himself from owing a company that he works for. He will still have to put his time in with one of the above mentioned companies to get the job training and experience but he won't be obligated to a company for up to two years or $?6000.

I went to C1 in Indianapolis, IN. Great School, but now I'm now a slave. I was told $30,000 the first year. I'll be lucky to make $20,000 and with the added expences it's not worth it. Plus my company just cut our pay by 5%. Can't wait till this year is over. If I had to do it all over again, I would run like hell to the nearest McD's and apply for a job there. At least I wouldn't have to be gone from home forever and pouring my money into company that rairly returns the favor.

better to extend his current schooling to pass the skills test than to take on one of the slave trade schools.
luvtheroad Thanks this. -
I just finished my last day of school today and the school I'm at if you fail then you'll have to pay a fee to take the test again. I personally wouldn't go to a company's school because of 2 reasons. Reason #1 that trucking company will only teach you just enough to pass the state test. The school i went to they taught me a lot of stuff that company schools don't teach since they don't really know where every student is going to work. So they cover all the bases. Reason #2 is i just don't like the feeling that someone owns me for at least a year. I work hard at keeping my freedom and I'm not going to let some company take that away from me.

Anybody that couldn't pass the test at the school will never make it with a trainer . He'd better quit wasting his time trying to be a trucker and find another career .
