No one in their right mind, having experienced the trucking industry for themselves, as either a driver, or an owner operator would ever want one of their offspring to go into this industry. My idiot husband helped our youngest get his class one, and then I sat junior and his friends down and told them the truth about this industry! From shippers that treat truckers like crap, to trucking companies that cheat, to dispatchers that take kick-backs, to companies that try to force drivers to cheat on log-books & threatening to fire drivers that try to be law abiding. It has been my great pleasure to date, to persuade over 40 young men from spending 3000 to 5000 dollars on driver training for their BC class 1. And, as a teacher, I come into contact with a lot of young men at an age when they are thinking of careers-and trucking is not a career-it is a life sentence. And don't get me going on our blasted Canada Revenue-you guys are out on the road, buying your meals and can only claim 50 to 60% of the cost on your income tax? I think it goes up to 80% in 2012. Sorry the government treats truckers like necessary vermin-the whole economy revolves around freight moving, and the guys/gals that move it are looked at like dirt by our own government. I will continue to bust my butt to help prevent any young person from entering this industry.

It doesn't help anything having freakin unemployment doing their "second career" program shooting hand fulls of people coming from one trade with no jobs into school for another that has even less.

Welders laid off only to be sent back to school to become truckers and not have a job and vise versa.

I always wanted to drive, it was just a matter of time before I did. Too bad I picked the worst time in 20 years to get into it. I might have been okay if I had started a few years ago when I was 21 and you could still get a job as a new driver.

Yeh alot of the layed off loggers in this area have been doing rushed courses to become truckers; filling the area with no experienced and willing to take low pay drivers. Luckily I have got a new job hauling tankers of milk and can get out of hauling wood chips and only working a day or two a week.

    Worst time????

Seems like you Canadians don't want the jobs (according to my critics) that's why some companies are STILL recruiting in Europe for drivers.
Check this blog.. just 'google' cathincanada

They don't just treat your boys and girls like crap, they import the likes of me from England and bust us (there must be a financial incentive for them).

I think I would know the situation here and your sources don't know JACK. There are NO jobs here even outside of trucking. I check about 15 places for job postings every day. Same story every day.

There are jobs, just hard on the guys and gals with little to no experience. Gonna be starting a new job on the 4th of August, plus right now it really helps if you have contacts to help you get your foot in the door with a company. That's how I got this job, right now its alot of "who you know not what you know".

Let me make a correction, there are a few job available for "perfect" drivers that have 5 years of experience, clean records and history etc. They are rare right now because the good ones are either still working or will not work for the low pay they are offering.

New drivers like myself are just as useless to the companies as someone with a troubled past it seems. Things are different and drivers are generally much more skilled in the UK as a whole vs north America. Here every idiot can get a CDL and believe me there are plenty with them that shouldn't be allowed to drive a car never mind a big truck.

Just because they are recruiting you guys over doesn't mean that people don't want the jobs.
