Have a 02 detroit non egr in the shop. Will not get over 8 psi of boost and with the labtop the engine will not show over 60% load. Checked overhead, wastegate, throttle position sensor, running out of ideas truck sounds o.k. but has no power when you try to pull a load. put the ecm on a different truck and it ran good. Turbo fins look o.k. on both sides and air-air is good any ideas?
detroit low power

Check how much voltage is getting to the ECM, check both cables coming off the batteries, follow the wiring to the ECM.
-
Voltage seems o.k. I need to follow ground and see where it connects to ecm because it doesn't come off of batteries and i don't see a ground on the block from harness. i have had ground problems on freightliners before could be a possibility.
-
The ECM should ground to the block and back through the chassis.
I have had 2 do that, the first was an injector, the last was not enough power to the ECM. Any way of reading the fault codes?
Actually had a N-14 do that only it would shut down, flashing lights and all.Last edited: Jun 24, 2009

Check your fuel, air filters, all the simple stuff if you haven't already. See what the fuel pressure is. I think Detroits use to be around 55-60 psi, but I would have to look that up to be sure. Also, where are you reading the boost from. If the ECM is only reading 8 pounds of boost, you won't get the fuel to the engine. The ECM will limit your fueling to match turbo performance. If the turbo is fine, the boost sensor may be bad. Just a funny thought too, make sure that little shut off valve near the rear fuel filter isn't half turned off, if it has one!

Thanks for the advice guys. Boost sensor i swapped out with another truck and still no change. Truck shows no codes. fuel restrction is under 2 inches. Grounds seem o.k. guy at detroit thinks it may be sticky injectors but you would think it would run rough then and they all wouldn't be sticking at the same time.
going to do some more wiring tests today and hopefully come up with something

welcome Willie, nice to see you joined this board . lots of Acert guys on here could use your overhead skills. will come see you when i need something.

because of where detroit mounts the ecm the wiring harness has a tendancy to get soaked with oil and can cause problems. I really can't help you much other then that tid bit of information. I'm just not that familiar with the detroits. the ones I have driven and had problems with had bad connectors in the harness. check and clean out all the plugs on the engine wiring harness

How did you check the air to air? I had a shop pressure test mine and found it was leaking on the back side between the radiator and cooler. I got a new one for $625 plus $50 shipping with a LT warranty from Radiator supply in Sweet Home, OR.

Another spot to check if you have a Air Compressor inlet hose coming from the intake manifold unlike the ones that attach to the air box. Check the hose near the side that faces the engine. Years ago I had a hole develop in a weak spot caused from the heat of the engine. -
I can tell you from experience that the hose from the intake to the air compressor will split where you can't see it. You will lose a lot of power when this happens. I found mine right after I bought the truck. The power was down bobtailing. I checked, and sure enough it was split. I fixed it before I ever pulled a load. As weak as it was without a trailer, I hate to think what it would have been like loaded.
