I was just reading through the minutes of the last drive issues meeting and noticed a very disturbing question and answer.

"Driver said that he had hauled several hazmat loads and hasn't seen it show up on his pay.
-If the customer pays an additional hazmat fee on the load, the extra $25 is paid to
that driver that hauled the load.
    "

I was never once told that the hazmat fee was like detention, only paid if the customer pays it. So I went back through all of my settlements and sure enough, I have never been paid for a single load of hazmat I've pulled for TMC. What the hell is going on here, drivers are now creditors for the customers as well as TMC? Maybe I'm in an usual position, has anyone else here hauled hazmat for TMC and not been paid for it? Honestly I've told my FM to not even bother offering me a hazmat load because the $25 they pay for it is an absolute joke, I guess the jokes on us for thinking they were actually even going to pay this amount. Has anyone else looked at their settlements and found hazmat pay missing or am I just an unlucky son of a gun? I would also like to mention that $25 is NOT what TMC charges for hazmat, owner ops get $100+, so to say "the extra $25" kind of implies that is the fee when in fact it is not.

More and more "If's" are coming about lately, aren't they?

You know, Legally you have the right to get a lawyer to obtain copies of all bills that have been paid to that truck that you're driving, since you're paid on a percentage of that.

I'll bet that if someone actually took the time, and made the effort to do this, TMC would probably owe a bunch of people money. I've ran into bills before that had the freight rate placed directly on them, and it was almost always different than the one TMC was giving me. I never called them out on it, though.. As they would just come up with some stupid excuse about Fuel surcharges (that were always on the bill under a different area i might add)

So, yeah. Just some food for thought.

I'm mileage so I'm not sure that I would have the same rights to the bills as a % driver, but I don't think it matters because they say what they pay for those services. Unfortunately I spoke to my FM this morning and was given the bad news that they do in fact only pay when they collect. He also tried to pass off that just getting one load pays for the endorsement, which I straightened right out with him in language that cannot be typed on this forum. Needless to say I'm done pulling hazmat for TMC. I gave him my pro numbers and he's looking up the information, with any luck they will back pay me for the loads, but how underhanded on their part, just inexcusable.

Good news, they looked up the pro numbers I gave them and they are putting it on my next check. I'm missing one pro number because I forgot to mark it as Hazmat but I'm glad they are at least going to make good on the numbers I went through my records to find for them. I also pulled a load of hazmat this week so I'll be checking that settlement to make sure it's on there. I'm still pretty disgusted that it's done so underhandedly and that I have to chase this stuff down while I'm on the road trying to deliver a 5 stop load. Anyhow, that's where it's at right now, I'm hoping to hear from other TMC hazmat pullers to see if this is an uncommon problem or the norm.

Honestly, your pay should have nothing to do with what the customer pays. If they don't want to charge the customer, that's their problem, it doesn't make your job any easier.

Hazmat should mean extra pay, it can be a pretty big pain, the same with OD loads which i quit hauling before i came off the road because i kept getting screwed over on OD pay for more excuses than i can even list here.

They do the same with detention, and I honestly believe they would do it with tarp pay as well if it weren't for the fact that we tarp practically for free. It's just another way the company can nickle and dime every penny they can from the driver same as requiring us to pay for hazmat, twic and passcards. The tool in the mechanics toolbox analogy they keep using is getting old, it doesn't even make sense. Most mechanics get an allowance for tools. I'll let you know if this pay turns up on my check, I'm not holding my breath but I told my FM I would not be hauling any more hazmat if I wasn't going to be paid for it so hopefully it comes through. Speaking of nickle and dimed, my loaded miles were off by 100 miles this load, my FM said "well it's a long distance run so that's only 6% don't worry about it". Absolute horsecrap, first of all they are cheating you on your pay, second of all they are tanking your OOR which for me can cost me a half a penny a mile. I was shorted 140 miles between the bounce and the load on this run. It's strange how the longer your run is the more miles they short you. I'm thinking I might go % in August, it will eliminate some of the issues I'm not happy with, but it will bring more complexity to the table. One nice thing about mileage is that not much affects your pay, get decent mileage and good OOR and you are just fine. I get an extra penny a mile for those, revenue is going to be a whole new animal for me. My last certification my revenue was at $677.

Cplmac2, FYI I have two brothers who are mechanics and they have never received a tool allowance nor have any of the other mechanics I know. As for the hazmat, twic and passcard why would any company want to pay for something you take with you? How would you feel if you ran a company and paid for these items only to have the employee quit a week after you dished out 3 or 4 hundred bucks.Tarping is part of the job and tarp pay has always been low I just think of it as a little exercise I get paid a little to do. Tracking what you get paid is a necessity no matter who you work for. Do you think TMC doesn't have to make sure they are paid properly by their customers? In addition I very rarely put in for detention as I have found it, as you have, to be very hard to collect. As for switching to % with freight rates the way they are I would hold off and stay on milage untill this economy gets back to normal. Just so you don't think I'm TMC management or something I am a Maverick driver who has been around this industry for a long time. Good Luck and be safe. TreeStand

Another thing to consider on tarp pay is what a company charges a customer and what they pay a driver. That might even ruffle more feathers if a driver knew the amount.:biggrin_2554:
