New owner operator, have issue with clutch

    Thanks for all the things I need to look into, but sadly, I'm still a rookie in spotting these kinds of things as an owner-operator. So I just dropped off my truck at the shop used by my old boss that serviced the truck for him for years and the owner of the shop even gave me 20% off labor for being a first time customer and for bringing my old bosses truck they know well already. So I'll have the day off tomorrow and with Saturday/Sunday should give the shop three days to do the repairs up to changing the clutch if it's that. I'll know more tomorrow afternoon after the shop has a good look at the issue.

    The way I described the issue when loaded, the shop owner told me they will put a 17 ton steel beam in my bed they have used to service wheel loaders to test the actual conditions when loaded and such, never heard of a shop doing that which sounds neat. So hopefully it's only a minor repair of a part that lasted since new at about 690k miles.

    Even if it did turn out that I need a new clutch, is 690k miles on the original good or such, not very familiar with how long parts like that should last? This is going to be a learning process on taking care and properly maintaining my truck. Mind you, I've never had anything like this happen since I started driving back in 2014 all in manual trucks ranging from 8LL to 13 and even 18 speed, so I believe I have learned the proper usage of the clutch and such through my father who is a 30+ year trucking veteran.

    It will be well worth it. New one, if that’s it, will last for years. Labor charges worth every penny, believe Me.

    I'm fairly new to this site and just saw your posts today. My truck, a '98 IH 9400 with an N14 does the very same thing. I don't have a hydraulic slave cylinder though. The weird thing about mine is if I'm taking off backwards going up a hill, the clutch engages perfectly. It only acts up going forward. I replaced the clutch, but no improvement. I was told might be motor mounts also. I replaced the front ones. No difference. I've also got the rear ones but haven't replaced them yet. Waiting for bad weather to set in so I'll have time and an excuse. Please let us know what you found out. It would be very helpful. Thanks.

    That very well could be your rear motor mounts, especially if you feel the clutch pedal moving around.

    When you are in Reverse it causes Flex in the opposite direction.

    You can take a look at your rear motor mounts and Visually see if there's anything broken or if they look loose. The rubber should all be complete all the way around and it should look very smushed. And the washers should be tight up against it.

    I would not wait to do the back ones very long. If the back ones are worn out in the meantime the front is taking more of the load. That load is supposed to be distributed evenly between all your motor mounts.
