If I was an o/o I honestly would go with a 13 or 15 only because of the type of freight I would be hauling and where I would route myself. Max gross on a constant basis. 10 car high rail or large car moving machinery /equipment. But if I was an o/o that went into big cities often with a few climbs here and there, yeah an auto is just fine lol.x1Heavy Thanks this.

It was about 12 years ago when my company switched me over to an auto shift. Since then every new truck I was assigned has been an automatic and it’s gotten better than the generation before it. I have no desire to go back to manuals. Pay extra if you want to learn how to shift. Learning is always good. I’m guessing, however, that it will just become a trivial skill in the future.

Automatics are compatible with technology, much easier to integrate then a manual, autonomous vehicles are in the works.

Yes.. you're right.
But, I never said SPIN my way out.
I said rock it out.
You can do that without jamming and gnashing gears.
Most don't.
That's equipment abuse.
I've seen plenty of guys just slamming it back and forth, or spinning like a Mad Man thinking that it will magically get a bite.
Yep.. they should call a tow... or throw out traction before they park.x1Heavy Thanks this. -
I would have to have a tow truck follow my log truck if I went by that plan. lol
AND I would forever be chaining up for no reason with any truck if I could not rock back and forth, no thanks. -
So an updated question here.... if the schools teach you on an automatic, is that a question you would pop to a prospective employer?
Driver: “Do you drive automatics here?”
Recruiter: “No”
Driver: “I guess I’m not qualified”
I would think it would behoove you to learn both if you want a job. -
Even worse. If you test with an automatic, you will have a restriction on your license where you cannot legally drive a manual.
Intothesunset and Iowa80 Thank this. -
Just read where it’s a restriction on your CDL if you test on an auto....
Guess that’s why it’s best to learn on manual....Intothesunset Thanks this. -
The only thing i like with the autos is the jake break and how when u put it on full jakes it drops 2 gears and tachs out rpms at 2200. Real nice when hitting off ramp i dont even have to hit breaks til i get to the stop sign.. Some guys like autos in traffic i hate it in traffic.it upshift 3 gears and idles along at 800rpm and when u come to stop behind car it seems to want to lurk forward. I switch to manual mode when im in rush hour traffic . its much easier to stay in one gear and putter along .. I miss my manual truck . i been in this automatic for about a year now and i still get the itch to grab some gears running towards the western sunset down the highway , aint that what truckins all about?
spsauerland Thanks this.
