I was bored and I have been trucking for a while. My mind was bouncing around to kill boredom and I got to thinking about CBs and why we use channel 19. Why not channel 1? Surely there is a history behind why we all use 19. Was just wondering about it.

CB radios are rather simple radios and the antennas are tuned to the center of the band. So the best channels to operate on are in the center of the band. I'm not sure how it ended up being 19 and not 20, but probably to keep 20 open as the call channel.

I used to talk with a group about 20+ years ago on channel 1 and I specifically tuned my old Johnson Johny One to peak on channel 1. That was about the only time I hung out on that channel.

We use 17 north of the 46 and 15 south of it out in CA. 19 gets used on east and west routes and in the truckstops.

I know that 9 is the emergency channel (not that it is really moniterd all that much) The one I never figured out is why it is that seems like West of SLC is 17 and East is 19 ... That one has always dumbfounded me....

Last time I was in California, it was north and south on 17 and others on 19.
