Never drove one, retired and likely never will.
I just wish people would stop calling them automatic transmissions.
Allison makes an automatic, the rest are automated.
Come on guys, both words have the same number of letters, is it that difficult to use the correct terminology?
More and more Automatics on the road?

I’ve noticed many drivers don’t even know how to properly get unstuck during the winter. They just put it in drive and spin spin spin until they glaze the compact snow into ice and now there’s no way to get out without a tow. I’ve managed to rock out with the automatics it’s just trickier since you’re doing full stops but with some kitty litter you can squeeze out.spsauerland and Goodysnap Thank this.

Doesn’t matter. They both suck.
shogun, TheyCallMeDave and Intothesunset Thank this. -
Truck drivers used to be professional. Controlling the truck shifting gears, knowing proper gears for downgrades and such. Alot of things come to mind. Now automatics, brings nothing but idiots, and dangerous idiots at that to trucking. They dont need to know how to drive a truck. Just push the "D" button or "Dumb: button and pick up your phone and drive. Watch youtube videos and smoke pot on the go. And also plow into a bunch of stopped traffic. ITs a shame and i despise the move toward automatics.

Automatics are for sallys. You know
who you are.Intothesunset Thanks this. -
Kind of hit that nail on the head.... I grew up with that “Jammin’ Gears has got to be a fever” thing. It’s pride.
Someone lays out an automatic to me in school... I’ll pass and take a gear.shogun and Intothesunset Thank this. -
The only thing I can think of this being normal now. Is because it lowered the skills need to get a certified green driver. The trucking industry is only about quantity, not quality for a long time now.
I wish I could find a carrier that would say if you can't shift a manual, you can't work here. -
My comment applies to automated also.
-
If I were a carrier I would heavily discriminate against those who could not shift a 13 speed unless their were disabilities involved.
-
Drivers need to learn how to handle an auto shift truck. Almost nobody talk about Descent Mode on the Detroit DT-12. Remember your not supposed to use the engine brakes on the snow and ice. The transmission won't downshift unless you turn on the engines brake
