Ok,
Total newb here. Approved and signed up for CDL school on the 13th of July. Goin through Driver Solutions and C1 in Indy. I am pre-hired through USA Truck. I have told myself I am going to keep a good attitude despite the negatives I have read. Just worried bout getting enough miles to make it. Just gotta get my start somehow. Any practical words from the wise would be appreciated. Thanks!
Need HONEST/USABLE advice.

Don't worry about your miles until your comfortable handling a truck. Anyone can drive a truck, but you need to know how to handle one. Your not going to be as good as someone who has been doing this for a lot longer. Don't try to be a hero. Don't let other drivers pressure you into mistakes. Do things at your own pace.

Thanks Biscuit, Thats what I'm lookin for. I'm very humble. I'm a newb and I know it. I just wanna do my best and be successful. But at the same time I have to make enough money to live too. It's just that I'm concerned about getting the miles to make a living the first year.

Most newbies will be lucky to make $30K first year. There are exceptions but that would be realistic IMO especially as slow as most companies freight is right now.
Also take heed to the advice biscuit gave you. Well said.Last edited: Jul 1, 2009

Thanks,
I realize that. As long as I can make at or near 30k the first year I will be ok. I am just worried bout getting stuck with 2 or $300 weekly checks. If I can clear $400 a week I should be able to make it ok. -
$30K a year woohoooo .... LOL sorry just had to comment on that.. Since I moved to Oregon I haven't made over 25K in a year (non-trucking jobs) and that has been for bout three years.. I am used to pulling in about 40K when I was living in cali ... ok.. just my little rant about looking forward to possibly hittin 30k the first year LOL -
It's really out of your hands at this point, it will be what it will be. Just do the best you can and get loads delivered on time and you'll be doing everything you possibly can.
IMO you've already avoided most of the companies that stretch training out forever and team you cheap. USA Truck is no worse than any other place you'd go according to the feedback around here.IUFAN87 Thanks this. -
LOL. Well as I said though there are plenty of exceptions, those exceptions can fall on either side of that number low or high.
My company has a guarantee of $50K your first year with them regardless of experience, which means we have students come in making $50k or higher their first year driving.

Uhhhh, what company is that? I obviously missed that one. Are they hiring?

Yes they are hiring, I sent you a PM.IUFAN87 Thanks this.
