You're allowed to do it if you have a pickup or delivery inside the loop. The cops can't tell just by looking at you if you are a thru truck, but Atlanta PD does stop trucks to check their bills. It's a big ticket if they catch you just cutting across town. A lot of trucks do it. A lot of trucks get caught. And Atlanta makes a lot of money from it. I've seen them setup just outside the loop and pull over every truck coming through the city.

I reckon they don’t stop the day cabs much or at all? I’d assume they target 53footers with sleepers.

Huh, I’ve only been down thataway a few times in my trucking career and honestly never knew that trucks weren’t allowed to use the freaking interstate to travel though there. I guess I always went around the loop just out of habit which is what I usually do dealing with a large metro area. I remember I ran 94 through Minneapolis/St Paul once and some of the local area freeways in Chicago just feeling adventurous but after that it’s like who cares, just get me out of here ASAP.

Long time Atlanta resident. Avoid going through town on i20 or the 75/85 connector if you have no business there.

Countless Georgia Dept. Public Of Safety and State patrol that target thru trucks. Proceed at your own risk.

I'm trying to figure out the advantage to it. It's not like you hit smooth sailing when you hit 20/75/ 85 outside of town. Atlanta is like DC. Either got to hit it early or late. There are no shortcuts.
