My truck has broken down and been towed to a dealership. Looking at a potential 1 week fix a 1000 miles from home.
I have been broken down for 4 days already, and the slow dealership has not even looked at the truck yet, it is likely that its a computer system failure.
My company wants to fly me home, but I will be unable to take my valuable personal items on a plane. This makes me sick, while the dealership has a locked fence at night, my truck is being left unlocked night and day so that the technicians can have access to it.
Has anyone else been in this situation? and I'm looking for ideas/suggestions for securing my property.
The items in question are related to a hobby that makes life bearable when I'm spending 2 months at a time on the road without going home.
Protecting valuables during a breakdown.

I always make sure that nothing in a semi is a must keep. There is a brief case with certain papers that will do a great deal of damage should a bad guy get it. Other than that they can burn it for all we care. We would cry for sure but its not the first time in life we scratch back with nothing at all to start over.
mustang190 and Lepton1 Thank this. -
Catch an Uber and put your valuables in a pay storage until you return.

You should leave your hobby stuff at home.
What hobby do you have?x1Heavy Thanks this. -
I can't imagine what is so large that you can't pack it up and take it with you.
Never leave anything in your truck or car when you go to get something worked on. If it disappears, it's your word against theirs. Most places have a sign somewhere that says they're not responsible for any valuables in your vehicle.
I don't get the mystery about your hobby. If it's a PlayStation or something why not just say it?
I would be concerned not only about your hobby stuff, I'd be concerned that they don't swap your tires with something older, or swap your batteries or alternator for something older or who knows what else?
Yes, I know of places that have done that.x1Heavy Thanks this. -

DO NOT SHIP THEM VIA UPS STORE.
I paid $100 extra for $1000 of additional insurance coverage on a ported cylinder head that got absolutely destroyed by the box throwers.. It said fragile all over it. They dgaf and they paid out zero. Said it wasnt their fault. Total loss with a side of insult to wash it down with. To hell with them.tscottme Thanks this. -
I don't understand the secretiveness about the hobby on the OP's part.
I actually play with trains as a passing, either in educational runs or computer driven model trains. Among other things. If that makes me a 8 year old then Im happy for it. I also am pretty good at modeling. The boxes with say a Pete in many plastic pieces needing painting and trimming etc. Eventually it will be a recognizable pete sitting on the table.
The bad part is its expensive. I sometime build very strong computers when money allows it or rebuild out of necessity. One machine has passed 12 years of work and this one is going on 4th year. Im already ready to order certain parts to assemble a spare. There is no profit in big strong computers. So I do it for myself and the ex.
If I am not at the table fidding with little parts Im out of the house doing something.
