Detroit series 60 blowby information

    No Detroit Diesel engines have closed crank case systems to this date including 2013 vehicles.

    the tube is still there on all trucks just instead of heading to the ground it heads else where to be reentered into the intake system. to test them you just trace the tube un hook and run the test

    When checking blow-by, you have to test the turbo, they bypass threw the seals on the compressor section, to the oil drain, the valve guides, they wear, and bypass air to the crankcase, the air compressor it bypasses air to the crankcase. Then there are the cylinder packs, they also leak.
    This is the same for all engine, no mater what color.
    To test the turbo you block off the compressor housing intake, and the output add 10 lbs air if it leaks it is junk.
    The air compressor just put air into the intake, if it leaks it is worn.
    Pressurise the intake manifold and measure the Crank case preasure 35 lbs and the engine will turn, write that down after 1 minute, turn engine 120 degrees pressurize wait a minute, and do it six times if some pressures are higher, you have a cylinder pack problem, if they are all relatively stable then it is the guides or all the Packs.
    I have a proper water manometer, and an adapter that goes into the dipstick tube

    what kinda load we talkin while testing?i just tested bobtail,no load.14l Detroit.714,000 miles.
    gauge sealed to filler tube read 2 at 1500rpm.up hill whent to 4 intantly and fell back to 3 half way up.I crossed this truck off my list assuming numbers would be higher under a load.what do these numbers tell you running down road with no load?

    [​IMG] Is it normal at operating temperature on a 98 Detroit 12.7 60 series motor to have steam coming out the oil filler tube while running and nothing coming out the blow by tube underneath?

    Are you sure its steam and not just normal blowby???
    If you got the oil filler cap off then its probley taking the path of least resistance so not much will come out the blowby tube with the oil cap off.

    if its actually blowby and I'm assuming it is then yes , completely normal. Series 60s do have more blowby then most other engines in general. Just drive it!

    Ok thanks as I'm looking at this truck and just don't want to waste my time if it was a big problem as I'm not familiar with Detroit's and will be my first Detroit motor owned. So again thanks for the help.
