Depends on how bad the smoke is.

Little is normal. A lot means problems.

I saw some random puffs coming from my blow by tube on my 14L a couple days ago. Got underneath to take a closer look. Didn't see any oil leak but I could feel the pressure about an inch away with my hand. To be honest...I've never checked it before so I can't compare it to anything. Not sure if it's something to be concerned about yet or not.

Just keep track of the oil make sure you take a good look before turning the truck on and check your level. But when you se black smoke coming out that tube and significant changes to the oil on your pre trip the first thing I will probably do is take it to some one to do a compression check If you dont already know how to do it your self...good luck

What do you mean by empty..did you have low oil...there reason for the comp test is because piston ring are gapped so after so many milles the gaps open up and you loose compression also you can have worn out sleeves wich can change the bore size of the piston.when it comes to mechanical anything can happen and can cause blow by some more than others do to the care of the truck, that's what happens when wee buy used trucks wee have to assume that the guy did take good care of the truck because wee cant see inside and dont know if the previous guy was one of them guys that drove truck all the way to the end I work for a guy like that once never changed the oil and when the oil was low he will tell us to go and add some and keep it moving...I hope the previous owner was not like that lol

I been driving series 60 ddec 4 for last 13 years in 2 of my trucks. Detroit and blowby are bounded. 1 engine was rebuilt at freightliner dealership and blowby was there after rebuild. 2nd used FP diesel kit with genuine head and injectors and blow by was there as well. So a perfect series 60 without blow by, i never experienced any!
