So does he get the mileage pay plus the diem and that is his pay or just the mileage?

The top part shows his mileage pay plus any tarp or stop off he may get while out. Then the next section shows taxes taken, then the following one shows the per diem pay, bottom parts the deductions. His per diem pay usually covers most of the taxes and deductions so most of his mileage pay is his. Kind of a weird way of balancing it out I guess.

Does a driver need to save all receipts while away from home for tax purposes? I'm trying to figure out what records/receipts I need to keep so I don't get surprised come tax time. The accountant I talked to admitted he is not real familiar with doing taxes for otr truck driver.

I believe that such a policy is illegal.

When in doubt, save the receipt.

As far as the food receipts, I don't even bother with them.

My husband saves all of his receipts, with the exception of food and beverages, since those I think fall into the per diem pay and aren't deductible, unless you're taking a client out maybe...lol
Anything for the truck he will keep the receipt for, no matter how minor, including a quart of motor oil or a gallon of anti-freeze (if the company doesn't reimburse you, then you are free to claim it, if they do reimburse you, well, do what you will). Even if he buys a dvd to watch in his truck, he deducts that as it's for his entertainment expense he's allowed. Anything to do with him in that truck he keeps receipts. If he buys a pair of gloves, deduction, it's for work purposes. His portion of our cell phone bill and his internet card, he gets to deduct a part of (I don't think it's 100%, could be wrong as I don't do the taxes). Our accountant has a lot of O/O's that she does taxes for and is pretty good at squeezing every bit of deduction she can lol.
Like Roadmedic said, when in doubt, save the receipt.

Roehl recruiter just told me Ellenwood orientation may be full and I may have to go to Marshfield. She will call me back later to let me know for sure. What's up with that? I've been scheduled for Ellenwood since 6/23/2009. If they switch me to Marshfield, I'll have to figure out how I'll get my car back home. That's approx a 16 hour drive!!!!

They have arranged for me to get a rental car to drive to Marshfield for orientation on 7/20/2009. I am excited yet apprehensive. I will try to keep this thread posted with my progress.
