"For something like this, send us a good image. Any time you have a question about components where there might be confusion about hardware, images are critical for getting meaningful responses."
AAWWWW.....Come on, that's no fun.
Then we wouldn't get 10 pages of people all saying basically the same thing.

It did get obsolete for quite a few years, but they started using greae at least to some extent by the late 80's and it has gotten much more common since then.
I had an 88 fontaine step that was grease packed. I finally changed it over to oil, which I prefer, but to tell the truth, the bearings ran a litter cooler before I changed it over to oil.
I also had a 96 transcraft flat that came grease packed, and sold it the way it came.Rideandrepair and Intothesunset Thank this. -

Next time you take a pit stop, carefully, put your hand on the hub. If it burns your hand then you have problems. Hot is ok, but not if it's hot enough to burn your hand.
Rideandrepair Thanks this. -
You do not want them mixed, one or the other. I have seen guys try to cheap out instead of buying a new seal and pack the bearings and add oil, it made a mess, and didn't work either.

The newer grease filled hubs I seen apart are absolutely STUFFED with grease... Almost like it was poured in a liquid state clear to the brim, hub cap and all.
I have packed my small personal trailers that full all my life... But its more than shops will do, and not cheap. Even a small trailer hub takes a #### ton of grease... I can only imagine how much a semi trailer hub takes to fill that full!!!Rideandrepair and Art Vandelay Thank this.
