Its not outside the realm of possibility. I've seen faulty aftermarket J1939 devices spam up the datalink on construction equipment. Unplugged the faulty accessory from the datalink, everything worked fine. Plugged it back in and lost communications on the datalink again.

There's a secondary hookup that restricts direct, possibly interfering, access to the engine information that you should use for the ELD, which takes an adapter like the one below.

Mine was peoplenet causing glitches. And it got pulled out.
But the last time I had problems. Which was last month.
The truck had some work done. And the battery wasn't tight. It was having a complete system wide failure.
