Wondering if trucking might be a good fit for me

    Howdy folks.

I've been out of work for about five years now and I'd really like to get back to work. Being alone all day sounds like heaven to me, and I've always had fun every time I've had to drive a U-Haul truck, so I decided to look into trucking.

Thing is I'm kinda crazy. Not like kill anybody crazy, but I got diagnosed with ADHD when I was a kid and was put in special ed classes. Then when I was a teenager I got worse and had to live in group homes and stuff, it was a bad scene and my shrink says I have PTSD from it. Plus both my kids are autistic so they said maybe I'm autistic too, dunno why they can't make up their dang minds what's wrong with me.

Anyway I'm sick of being on disability, I want to work again but I can't stand the idea of working some cashier job and dealing with customers all day, and even with my worthless college degree ain't no jobs for somebody without any experience except customer service jobs. Except maybe trucking, I'm hoping.

I can probably get Vocational Rehab to pay for me to go to trucking school, but I don't want to waste my time or the taxpayers' money if it's not gonna work out. So with all that said, here's my questions.

    1. If I get my shrink (psychiatrist) to sign off on it, will I have problems getting medical clearance due to mental issues? I do take an antidepressant but it's not for depression, it's for anxiety from the PTSD. I also take Adderall for the ADHD.
    2. How long do I have to be drug-free for before I could get a trucking job? I tried medical marijuana a while back, and while I liked it, it only seemed to make my anxiety worse so I stopped it a few months ago. Obviously I know I can't be smoking the devil's lettuce with a CDL and I'm completely fine with that, I just need to know how long to wait before I try.
    3. Can anybody recommend a CDL school in my area? Beaver County PA, just north of Pittsburgh. (I definitely don't want to get into the employer-paid training thing.) And/or recommend an employer to start with once I'm done with school?

    Thank you!

I was diagnosed with add in the early 80's when they were just figuring out what it was and went they all that mess. I found delivery work to be kick ### for me, I'm a idle hands are the tool of the devil so I need to be doing something...all the time. I have been able to focus on numbers in delivery work...always working on beating yesterday's numbers...if I just go a lil harder I can beat yesterday's numbers, planning on how I'm going to beat today's numbers tomorrow...etc. it has allowed me to focus, have a career, and make a metric #### ton of money in the process which is never a bad thing. When it comes to passing the dot physical don't offer up any self incriminating words to the doc and you will be okay. I would go look at companies that may do a dock to driver program in your area. A Duie Pyle, Pitt Ohio, Estes, R&L, etc and see if they will throw you on the dock while they teach you to drive. It might work out for you if you are anything like me.

Nope sorry, you will be alone, but surrounded by people that can't even see further than four feet in front of thier car. just a bunch of idiots in a hurry to make a mess and go nowhere any faster than they would if they just stuck behind the slowest vehicle they could find... Seriously. Nobody likes to drive, they do something else while driving instead and therefore can't drive with a dang.

Don't do it... Poo flinging monkeys everywhere!

I'm not sure that's for me. I'm trying to get out of debt, not further into it. Maybe a few years down the line when I know what I'm doing though. Thank you!

Long as I don't have to talk to 'em, they can fling whatever they like. :) I used to do tech support. Handling customers over email or LiveChat was fine. It was just talking to 'em on the phone I couldn't handle.

That actually sounds great! My biggest fear in all this is sinking time effort into learning to do something only to find out it was a horrible idea and a bad match for me, but that sounds like it would let me get my feet wet and earn some cashola at the same time, which is perfect.

Most ltl companies will start you out in the yard moving trailers too so you can get a feel for it all while earning a paycheck instead of paying someone else. Then if you feel it's not a good fit you can move on to another job without owing anyone any money.

If anything will hold you back it will be possibly the meds you take and....with you being unemployed for so long is a big issue with most of the trucking companies.
