I got my CDL in 2015 and came up on ELDs, had no problem with them. I left trucking for a while but have kept my CDL active as a fall back. It looks like I will indeed be falling back in the near future, as I have an opportunity to come back as an O/O with a decent kind of short term setup. However, I have heard of these new regulations that sound like total ### ####.

From what I hear, you automatically get kicked into drive time at 5 mph, or you can use the On-Duty yard move which will cut into your 10 hour break anyways? What's the point of even using the yard move? Why not just start your drive time then if it'll interrupt your break anyways?

So if you're at a shipper and they ask you to move, what do you do?

You are going to have parking lots full of trucks inching forward, trying not to go over 5mph. How is that safe?

I'll be honest, this single mandate might scare me away from returning to trucking even for a quick buck. This is going to cause so many problems.

The only thing I can think of is to use the Off Duty Personal Conveyance. Seems like it'll be the only way to make money. I would hope companies will become even more lax about drivers using PC time.

I want to hear some input on how drivers are dealing with this and if the DOT might make any adjustments if they get enough backlash.

Paper logs and I don't think any satisfying changes to the regulations will come untill trucking is dead and gone

You can make money just charge detention time or get a good rate that will cover the loading and unloading time. You can't move truck over 5mph without logging driving time. That is what Yard Movement is for. You just don't get a free ride. It will be On-Duty time. This is not the old days anymore the HOS come first. You want to change parking spots at truck stop? That Personal Conveyance now.

It's Friday evening I got 700 miles to go for Monday morning delivery. I have 32 hours left on 70. I can deliver load on time and probably run out of hours on Monday afternoon or Tuesday. The other options is do a 34 hour restart and make the load late on Monday. I'm driving a company truck so they can pick the option they want. I think it kinda fun because we now see how bad dispatch really is. I'm safe because the ELD will back me up. I have guaranteed minimum every week, so I'm getting paid no matter what they choose. I know they won't like a 34 hour reset in middle of the week. Then again the load can't be late also on Monday morning.

It's not that bad dude. I creep around all the time. Majority of drivers don't have enough patience to creep. Use it to your advantage. You can move around a shipper and receiver or truck stop without kicking your drive time on. That's what it's made for.

Here's another option. Why not run legal and work for a company that pays enough running legal?
I don't ever have to worry about ELD tricks to stay compliant because my company actually pays all my time

Another one I never thought about before was driving from fueling to parking spot. That's Driving Time now. It not very much but it all adds up. The bigger stuff like rush hour traffic is all Driving Time now. We are using Keep Trucking ELD and you can't even look at load info or anything unless you change not driving. We you check in at security gaurd. To get pickup number or something, you have log On Duty. Then when you check in at shipping office you have to the same thing or log Yard Move. It still all counts as working time. For the week. It a big change at first even from AOBRDs

You could take your 34 now and easily be at your destination by 6am Monday.

Not sure about that. It all depends on how fast of average speed I could make. 700 miles at 50mph average is 14 hours plus 34 hour break is 48 hour. Since we can't drive more then 11 hours I would be 4 hour short so I would need another 10 off. So 58 hours. Your right at at limit of making it. Then you have real traffic and hills.

I find 600 miles in 24 hours, that an average speed of 25mph is very close to real Driving time. Because you also have fuel and truck inspections. I would do 700 miles at 25mph is 28 hours plus 34 reset. That would be 62 hours or maybe 58 hours on the low side. Then Friday evening plus 62 hours would be arrival time if parked by 10pm on Friday 48 hour is 10pm Sunday add 12 more hour is 10am Monday that's 48+12 is 60 hours. Two more hours would be 12 noon Monday That's how I do it.

Yard move is so it doesnt kick on to drive time... Driving around shipper doing drop n hook or driving around jobsite getting unloaded , etc all that cuts into drive time if not under yard move . some days that extra 20 minutes of drive time u might have wasted at the customer could be the differenece between finding safe parking and not finding safe parking, unfortunatly thats what it has come down to.
