Tough times ahead says largest U.S. truck company

When you hear a whse complain we have freight to move but no one is picking it up it is for one reason. Whomever is paying the freight is not willing to pay enough, so it sits.
Knight transportation knows their break even point. This guy will park trucks and mothball trailers before he gets into a rate war with the influx of small companies moving broker stuff for nothing. He is betting he can wait them out.
I am not so sure.

 

My company said the same will be letting drivers go.

 

Megas always have a lot of trucks sitting, and they can afford to run cheaper than I can. They run on volume as much as anything else, it is a whole different deal when you are moving 1000 loads a day and only clearing 10 cents a mile, than 1 load for that same 10 cents. I have been known to park mine for a year at a time, because of rates before.

 

Was a article awhile back about some companies saying they wanted to get trailers off railroad contract it was costing too much. But they said not enough trucks available. Lol

 

Well, gee, the folks at Marten must be lying or something...........

Marten Transport’s Net Income up 8.7% as Revenue Hits High
Revenue improved 7.7% to a record $215 million for the third quarter, up from $199.6 million for the third quarter of 2018.

Marten Transport officials said it was the highest revenue for any quarter in its history, with the previous record set in 2019’s second quarter.

 

All you need to know is one statistic.
3.4 percent unemployment.
In other words, full employment.
Not to mention the chronic worker shortages, especially in the trades.

 

That was last year.
We are talking about now- 2019.

not true. Full employment would factor in percentage of people in the workforce.

If one is not actively looking for work, one is not considered unemployed. Percent in workforce isn't as bad as it was, but its still bad. In the mid 60's I think (need to google it).
