So I'm a 1st yr apprentice in the trades union right now. But, of course, I'm laid off at the moment. Been laid off for the past month. As a result, my wheels are turning again. Prior to joining the union, I was working for a constructon company running dump trucks and flatbeds hauling concrete forms and backhoes around. I wouldn't mind getting into specialized oversize hauling since you can make some good money in that area. What would you guys recommend as the best route to get into that field? Would it be applying to an outfit like Melton, then trying to slide over to ATS after a year or two?
Best way to get into oversize hauling??

Why don’t you just apply to an excavation company, crane, paving or anyone with big machines and tell them you want to pull a lowboy?
you already have experience and you are already a union guy so those are both in your favor.
why go OTR? that’s moving backwards.csmith1281, AModelCat, FoolsErrand and 2 others Thank this. -

Why wouldn’t they hire you? You already have experience you say moving machines. Don’t discount yourself.
if you can chain something to a flatbed you can chain something to a low bed. It’s just another kind of trailer. Nothing to worry about.
instead of driving it on ramps in the back you drive it on the front. Big deal
You have all you need to get hired at a good construction company. You know dump trucks, you know flat bed, you know how to drive a machine on a trailer. Literally all you haven’t done is drive a wider machine on a trailer lol. You can get a job man, don’t go otr. There is more money in an operator job locally pulling a low bed.csmith1281, Truckermania, AModelCat and 4 others Thank this.
