The brakes on my 2003 FLD have started feeling very mushy and don't engage until the pedal is depressed a long ways. I know that is a very scientific description! Also, my engine brake is set to come on with the brakes and it seems I really have to press hard for it to engage. My dealer adjusted the brakes before harvest. Is this signs of bad brakes or a bad foot valve?

Change your treadle valve.

I removed the treadle valve yesterday to see how it worked. The "needle" that goes through the firewall from the pedal into the valve is loose. Is it supposed to be that way?

I’ve ran into this before once where the drums swelled and the brake pads looked good from the outside, but when you looked into the drum down the edge of the pad, you’ll see the taper in the pad. When you remove the drum you’ll find the pad is riding on the rivets.
I of course replaced almost every valve on the truck before I figured it out. So it might not hurt for you to take a good close look at your brakes shoes, before you start buying parts or paying a Mechanic lots of times to keep over looking them... sometimes, it takes a very close look to find it without removing the tires and drums, which makes it often overlooked..Goodysnap Thanks this.
