There is some good advice on how to be comfortable and minimize your idle time in the central thread.

And why, after 8 months, I believe I had it figured out and am now out of the industry, having gotten the passenger endorsement on the CDL and driving tour bus. During that interviewing process, I found it very interesting to discover bus operators don't even know what the DAC is. One might think being responsible for 55 lives might take priority over a trailer full of whatever. That said, they did want my MVR and references.
The difference appears to be one of reasonable common sense and not hanging the DAC as a threat over your head at all times. Hmmmm.....

Anyway, I think we'll know a lot more about the industry, as a whole, by the end of the year. Will be interesting to see who the survivors are and how the drivers are doing.

I have a number of friends still driving and hope everything works out well for all in the long run.

Swift is not a representitive of the trucking industry. Real companies dont operate that way. Get with a small outfit less than 100 trucks, it's night and day.

I told them this week, I didnt want to hear anymore about idle,..I was at 16% week before last because I had a good many nights it was cool enough to rest without A/C, and last week it was 41% because I was running in the heat wave Midwest and had to idle 4 nights out of 7. I guess I will see what they do, I told them I had shown the ability to make good judgement calls on idle and I didnt want to get anymore "counseling" Q Comm messages.

I am desperately trying to find another job , but cannot locate a good small carrier near where I live. They even admitted to me that my idle for a 30 day period is very good, but that I dont use the Idleaire or a motel when the temps are up. They stated they are REQUIRED to pressure a driver for violating the policy even if its for a week over when he has 3 weeks under. I told them that is retarded. I firmly stated that I will not deviate from my policy of resting if the temp is too high and to do whatever they had to do,..I am done discussing this stupid issue. I will NOT use Idleaire and I will NOT pay for a motel so Jerry can line his pockets off my sufferring in the heat,..wont happen.

They just sent a Q Comm message on Thursday to all drivers letting them know that 3700 drivers have under 8% idle for the last 3 months,..but what they fail to tell you is, these are all teams and NE regional trucks. I think they are bluffing about this idle crap and I intend to put them to the test,..I am going to idle when its needed and not idle when its needed,..and I alone am going to be the judge of when that is,..and they can do whatever.

Swift has really shown me what they think of me and every other driver by this over-bearing, strong arm tactic to save $$ by abusing the hired help. I am disgusted and ashamed to claim Swift as my employer,..I wont as soon as I find a suitable replacement for them or they push me farther than I am willing to be pushed about this.

I asked for clarification about the idle parameters and got NO answer,..I idled 4 nights for a grand total of 27.5 hrs,..thats 12.5 hrs less than a full 10 hour break for the 4 nights I needed A/C to rest and in my book, I am actually conserving pretty well to not idle for the full 10 hrs each night I needed the A/C,..and that 27.5 hrs made me ,.....an Idle Abuser,...Swift is pathetic,..I took a total of 70 hrs of rest for the week and idled only 27.5,..and thats not good enough for Jerry and Richard,..

    back in the late 90's
I ran a day cab cross country. The company was installing idle timers and watching idle times.
Well due to the fact I had a day cab my idle time was allways low.
The division I was on loved it, because it was figured in with the other trucks and kept the fleet avg. low.
Then one day the boss sent a msg. about my low idle time.
Thought it was just to me. No the whole fleet got it.

One driver raised so much havick over it they took my truck out of the avg. and raised their idle times and then they all were getting msg.

Messed up a good thing for all of them, because of one driver

In a Volvo, 'I Heard' you can pull a fuse that the Qual Comm uses to communicate with the engine ... 'I Heard' the Qual Comm will read NO RPM while idling ... 'I Heard' drivers that do this enjoy pleasant messages from Richard Stocking thanking them on their low idle time.

    Just something I heard.
