I sure will thank you all for your help, and where would be a good place to start looking for someone to come out and cut the counterbore, cat?

    OLDSKOOLERnWV Thanks this.

Cat can, but around my parts there are some independent guys that do it just as well and cheaper. Call or ask around local shops. Might talk with someone that works on heavy equipment too.

    Oxbow Thanks this.

I checked with a local machine shop that deals with heavy duty engines, and he quoted me about $500 to cut the block deck and counter bore and as long as head checked out with no cracks $625 and that counts valve job and seals. That's with me bringing him the motor out of the truck as to he doesn't have the shop for fitting a truck in his shop and he doesn't have a mobile unit. He told me of another shop that does on-site in truck work where he cuts and shims counter bore, I've yet to call him yet. How do you feel about having the block deck cut. Seems like that would limit future repairs on next rebuilds.

I’m guessing you’re in West Virginia?

@OLDSKOOLERnWV may know someone that can come to you and do the machine work.

    Oxbow and AModelCat Thank this.

If I recall correctly, around 0.010 is all Cat states can come of deck. Upper inserts, water hole erosion repair, clean up resurface on block deck should outlast you if done properly! Let's see what block looks like.

Those blocks will last just about forever if they don't have a catastrophic failure. I just had a 92U 3406 at a machine shop. Engine's 40 years old and that was the first time the deck had been cut. Only reason I had it cut was due to some minor errosion around the coolant ports. Hell the main bores have yet to be cut oversize or the original crank has yet to be cut to its first undersize.

Oxbow, spsauerland and 062 Thank this.

Standard height of production block is 16.750" +/- 0.006". Minimum height is 16.733". Cat states minor erosion can be cleaned up if doesn't exceed 0.011".

    Oxbow Thanks this.

What neck of the woods you in? I’m close to Huntington myself.
