I wear normal vans high tops over nomex socks. No need for those $300 redwing driving shes unless you are in a sports racer with the pedals 3cm apart.
Why did you quit OTR

I just completed my 2nd full year at Walton milk hauling doing farm pickup. I've already broke 60k still over a month to go.
I did OTR for 3 months in 2017. It sucked for me. Being apart from my wife.... I was not prepared for that. She drives me crazy sometimes but I can't stand being away from my wife of 15 years.
I own a home. When I was gone I wasn't home to deal with anything. The basement flooded, we had plumbing issues, the car was not getting preventive maintenance.
Then there are my two sons. Mathew who is 8 and Noah who is two.
Mathew got sick lately.... Extreme headaches, nausea, throwing up, dizzy ECT ECT. I drove truck today but was able to take him to the hospital.
I can't imagine being "on the road" with a child in the hospital.
Unless my wife died somewhere and my kids were grown.... Local for me.MYSTYKRACER and dwells40 Thank this. -
Before I got married, I loved the solitude being out on the road for weeks at a time. If I wanted time off,I just told dispatch to add a day or two to the load I was on. Farm and construction equipment doesn't have set-in-stone appointments.
Now, married, the wife rides with me. Sometimes I miss the solitude. I oftentimes miss taking unscheduled time off to just ride my bicycle. She has friends all over the country and thinks we can just go wherever.... it's a long road, but I'm slowly getting her over that notion.
Being an owner leased on, you'd think I have more latitude than as a company driver but it's the opposite. There's always something that needs fixed or modified or adjusted or...something.
I haven't quit OTR, don't think I ever will. I started out that way and, save for a 10yr previous marriage, I've been on the road in some form or other since I was 17. Maybe I'll slow down one day...I've got a few things I want to try. For now, though, I cant imagine sitting still for more than a day or two.MYSTYKRACER Thanks this. -

I last worked for an OTR trucking company 2-3 months ago, the company was giving me work assignments which were violating DOT rules/hours of service and I resigned after 2 weeks. The trucking company prior to that one did not inform me my driving job would include unloading 40,000lbs trailers by hand (I ended up spending more hours a day hand loading/unloading trailers than driving). I may come back to OTR with hope I'd get hired by a more reputable company than the megas I was driving for.Last edited: Nov 11, 2019
