I guess what we have to do, is refine the definition of moron. We don't know the whole story, the fact that they had a dash cam , even though it will be used against them, instead of for, I don't think they were a schmoe, just poor judgement. Thankfully, nothing but the truck, guard wires and this persons ego was hurt. Too bad this is what it takes, and this driver gets another chance and shouldn't happen again. If it does, THERE'S your moron.

Been driving on snow and ice for decades w no issues, one must respect less then optimal conditions, but as we go into winter I can't get a feel for conditions w these newer trucks. Between roadbed viscosity/ slickness and the drivers seat. Hate the automatics in icy conditions.

Normally you'd see a car in the ditch first but lately....

I don't know about most drivers but I'd be embarrassed & mad as hell at myself if I was in the ditch.

At that point along with the wrecker the DOT officer shows up and says these dreaded words:
    “LET ME SEE YOUR LOGS!!!”

From bad to worse. Out of hrs on your logs, strike 1, slick road strike 2, over driving the conditions, strike 3. Game over.

Like I said, Iowa had snow on the ground for over 3 months. You run in these areas, you sometimes you do not have the luxury of waiting until tomorrow.

ELD's fault. It crashed, and the driver was trying to reboot it. While doing that, the driver decided to pull over to wait, but decided he needed to check on the tandoms at the same time. It's cold and nasty out, so he performed this expertly executed maneuver to keep himself warm.

This driver was flyin'!!! Waaaaaay too fast for the conditions!!! I wouldn't drive that fast in a 4 wheeler in those conditions, and certainly not in a big truck! Good Lord, this genius is aspiring to be a contestant in the Darwin Awards.
