Sounds right. You don't really pay taxes per se, it's a yearly registration fee based on income in the state. Unless you have a nexus there. Single member LLC may be less than C-Corp.
I would have to check, but i think i used my BOC-3 agent for them. I know i don't pay anyone yearly for it.
Once you register they will send you everything you need
Business license to travel through New Jersey

Thanks @Dino soar and @wichris for this info... I'm getting some ducks in a row (slowly) and was completely unaware of this issue with NJ. Set up as DBA for now, but may move to single member LLC depending on further chats with my accountant.
Dino soar Thanks this. -
So you are saying that you use the same boc-3 agent that you used for your Authority? Would you mind checking on that?
I wonder if I could use the boc-3 agent as my registered agent for the LLC in Pennsylvania also?
I am going to get this started shortly and it would help if I didn't have to pay a registered agent $125 a year.
*** I thought that I asked ooida if I could use the boc-3 agent for my LLC in Pennsylvania. I thought they told me no.Last edited: Nov 14, 2019

Here's the latest update.
I called ooida and asked them if my boc-3 agent for New Jersey would be able to accept mail for my foreign corporation Authority.
They said no. They said the boc-3 agent is only for matters regarding your Authority. They said that's a different situation than a registered agent.
So for me anyway a separate registered agent is required.dosgatos Thanks this. -
If you have an attorney in PA, ask if he has a buddy in NJ that will do it.Dino soar Thanks this. -
I had zero knowledge this existed until a post in a facebook group I am in today:
"So, I have a question because I am in uncharted waters. I had a driver that got stopped at the scales in New Jersey today. They called me and said that I have not paid my taxes in the state for 3 years. Well, I have never owed taxes in NJ because we are based out of South Carolina. They said that it was a franchise tax that I owed for buying and selling goods and services in that state and the assessment was $8800.00 due immediately or the truck and trailer would be impounded. I told them that I do not buy or sell goods in the state, nor do I buy or sale goods at all, my customers do, I just transport them. They said "well we do not know if you do or not, but you must pay this assessment now, or we will impound it" I called around and I was told that they could, and I have to pay now, then appeal, and I would get my money back in 300-400 days after I appeal. Has anyone ever heard of this? This is insanity. With all this being said, careful if you are going thru NJ, because they are doing a blitz at scale houses for this very thing. Any insight from anyone with any experience with this would be very helpful. In case anyone wants to respond with any criticism, I will save you time by saying that I pay all taxes and fees that I am supposed to pay, this "fine or assessment" was based on me paying taxes on a franchise that buys and sells goods in nj, which I absolutely do not do."TheLoadOut and TallJoe Thank this. -
So what other friggin states can impound your rig until you pay their highly unknown "tax"?
This swamp is deeper and larger than anyone can even imagine.TheLoadOut Thanks this. -
