I have been a mechanic for over 40 years working on trucks and machinery mostly and never been out of work. During tough times people don't buy new trucks and equipment they just keep repairing the old iron. Good if your a mechanic.
Getting dirty you learn how to manage it. Most days I come home clean. If I were to do it again I would probably be a mechanic again. I like the challenge that comes with troubleshooting a complicated problem be it electrical electronic or hydraulic or air system etc. I have always made a good living for me and my family.
You don't need to buy tools out of the Snap-on truck there are lots of good mid grade options out there.
If tools the you buy have a life time warranty they will probably more than suffice.
It can be hard work but will keep you in shape. Most trades pay about the same but require less investment in tools and equipment.
Is diesel mechanic a good profession to join? Age 30.....?

I rather come to you with a sick truck engine and please fix her. See what you can do with her there right quick. -
Thanks guys for answering my question. I really appreciate it. Currently will be working full time while going to night school for diesel tech. Starting in one week. May God be with you all. Be blessed.

I used to do auto mechanic work. Now I own a truck and do most of my own wrenching. If I could redo it I wouldn't spend so much on the Snap On truck. I agree some of the cheaper tools work just as well and don't cost nearly as much. That truck account and making payments is so easy before you know it you owe the man $15,000 or more.
That being said, diesel mechanic is an excellent field to be in. If you think you would enjoy it you probably would. I enjoy occasionally working on my truck.
