I recently made the fool's decision of upgrading my driver's license to a class 1. It was a terrible school in terms of how much money I paid. I got the impression that most people who train there are on some sort of government assistance or program because I definitely did not feel like they treated me as if I had just spent over 10,000 dollars to pay for the training. Very disappointing experience, but not as disappointing as the realisation that without exactly 2 years of experience I am worthless to these companies.
I am very sad, I spent a significant amount of money to get this license and this post here is a sort of last resort before I absolutely bury this entire industry and never think of trucking again.
Also I have clean criminal record, clean driving record, 2 years experience driving tandem axel lift gate set up, as well as a significant amount of time hauling bales when I was a kid, a job I somehow managed to do safely despite not having 2 years of experience.
Anyways this rant is driven by desperation and your help would be very much appreciated.
Off topic observation: the new MELT program does not include a load securement course. This is ironic because the cause of the MELT program was a collision caused by...not being trained in load securement. Amazing.
Do companies hire new drivers, or do they simply manifest with 2 years experience

I have applied and spoken with their recruitment team, there are no jobs in western Canada right now. They are a great starter company though from what I've heard.
For the record, I've applied for positions with every company in BC and Alberta -
Somebody here will know what to do you might have to do a dump truck job at first.BigHossVolvo Thanks this.

Dump Truck is even worse! with the collision rate, and the ####### city 4 wheelers, all looking for a quick payout. Crashing into gravel trucks is the new norm, to get that leased BMW 3 series off your back. Expect 3-5 years min exp for dump.
@Fmlfrtho right now is a bad time, the Democrats are totally ####ing up the "New NAFTA" *USMCA*, the economy is slow/crashing, China is ####ing around with imports and exports, the "New Canadian" companies are running for FREE (Yes Free), so its pretty rough.
However, DO NOT GIVE UP! I was you 3+ years ago, and I found a way; you will also.
You didn't mention what city you are in? If its Calgary or Area, I would be calling IHaul Freight, Heyl Truck Lines or CPX/VersaCold. If you're in BC, IHaul Freight, CPX/VersaCold, TransX/CanXpress.
You will have to do US OTR for 2 years, no way around it. After that, sky is the limit!Fmlfrtho Thanks this. -
In the US dump truck can be a starter job.

In the US, he could have gotten his lisc for free at Prime, and already be solo also. We’re pretty screwed, up here.Phantom Trucker Thanks this.
