The Washington Post newspaper today (Wednesday, July 8, 2009) put out an article in the Metro section for the Virginia highway rest stops that will be closed due to a budget crunch.
I can't post the URL here because of website rules but go to that newspaper's website or Google News to look up the article.

Today (July 21, 2009) is the day that the Virginia State Government is closing seven rest stops along Interstate 81, four on I-95, four on I-85, two on I-64, and one on I-66 were targeted. The I-66 Welcome Center in Manassas will remain open through mid-September but will then close forever.
These rest stops will have their equipment stripped out and be sold or used at other rest stops that did not close.
This is big news on WJLA TV (Channel 7) and WTTG TV (Channel 5) in Washington, DC and in the Washington Post newspaper. If you go to these three respective websites, you can find more information.Last edited: Jul 21, 2009

Umm... lots of states can afford rest stops. Not very many have scales open 24/7. Don't suppose the obvious occurred to them.

Don't be silly, of course it did.
One can generate far more revenue at a scale house than a rest stop.
It is Virginia, after all...
