I keep seeing posts about paying lumper fees. If I pull into a dock I have to pay someone to unload the truck out of my own pocket? Do I have to pay for D.O.T. fines as well? How much is paid by the carrier compared to out of pocket? Doe this apply to company drivers or just O/O's?
Fees??

Hey Driver,
It just depends on the company that you work for. Personally, I would work for anyone that makes me pay for anything out of pocket!!! O/O or Company! -
You have been driving for a year and never had to use a lumper? What does your company tell you about lumper fees? When I was a company driver they would pay so much for a load of meat to be unloaded and that would be it. If it cost more then you paid. I never paid. I hired me to do the work and got paid for it.
As for DOT fines. If it is for something you did wrong you know who will pay, you. If it was say a truck or trailer problem that should be your companies dime. -
Don't be surprised! It happens. I've been driving 10 years & don't even know what a lumper looks like let alone how much they charge.

I've driven only straight trucks. I have to do all the work.

I will attempt to answer your questions... My answers may not be correct. If they are not, someone would be more then happy to correct me.
#1) If I pull into a dock I have to pay someone to unload the truck out of my own pocket?
99% of the time no. Although I have never dealt with lumpers... From what I have been told by other driver's is that the lumper tells you his price, you quallcomm that price to your company, and they issue a comcheck for his services.
#2) Do I have to pay for D.O.T. fines as well?
Depends on what the fine it. Logbook violation? yes! Speeding? yes! Over weight? Maybe! Fines for busted up broke down equipment are usually paid by the company. But you will probably be fined as well for driving that unsafe busted up equipment.
#3) How much is paid by the carrier compared to out of pocket?
How much of what?
#4) Doe this apply to company drivers or just O/O's?
Company driver's. Owner Operator's are liable for all costs since they own the equipment unless prior arrangements were made before hand. I'm guessing we are still talking about lumpers right? -
I dunno, what kind of DOT fines?
Would you expect them to pay if your were drunk or on crack. How about if you just drove 200 miles with a tire missing, or your seat belt hanging out the drivers door. Is it that kind of stuff you are thinking your company should pay for or what? Please elaborate? -
As far as DOT I was talking about basic truck violations( reflectors, leaf springs, overweight, bad tires etc.). I know I'm responsible for speeding and log book stuff. As for the how much is paid by the carrier I was refering to as lumpers and tolls and feul if you're a company driver. The company I work for pays for everything as long as it's not a personal violation like speeding, but I didn't know if the big rig companies work the same way. Just trying to get an idea of how it all works before i get in over my head. Thanks for all and any feedback everyone.

Hey if you are looking for a new company to drive for just ask them. Ask them anything you want to know about. I would stay away from reefer companies and companies that haul to grocery whrs if you want to stay away from lumpers. Ask them who they haul for. What they haul. Ask a driver you meet that drives for a company you are looking at. Good luck.
