There was a scalemaster on TTR.
He clearly stated you need a printer in your truck.
Emailing them is a favor the LEO can give you but he is not required to do so.

He’s clearly wrong. I’ve had them tell me lots of things that are bull$hit. Tell me, do ELD trucks have printers?

ELD's run off different laws than simple electronic logs. The electronic logs section specifically states it must be printed off. AOBR and ELD's do not have that requirement.

Of course now that I look it seems the electronic log wording has been removed from both guidance and regulation. Without that it falls back to paper requirements, and if there is no actual paper log....

My last inspection was in AZ. He wrote me up for AOBRD requirements not met.

I was laptop. And this was before the mandate took effect.
I had printer and logs were printed though.

If the log is kept on a logging app such as Keep Trucking and not a compliant ELD or AOBRD then YES it must be printed on demand of the officer at roadside. Email or other transfer methods are a courtesy that some officers will give drivers.

Below is the official FMCSA guidance on this, pay attention to the last line of their answer.

Question 28: May a driver use a computer, tablet, or smartphone (that is not an Automatic On-Board Recording Device) to create, electronically sign, and store the record of duty status (RODS)?

    Guidance:

Yes. A driver may make manual duty-status entries to a computer, tablet, or smartphone program that is used to generate the graph grid and entries for the record of duty status (RODS) or log book, provided the electronically-generated display (if any) and output includes the minimum information required by §395.8 and is formatted in accordance with that section. The driver must sign the RODS (manually or electronically) at the end of each 24-hour period to certify that all required entries are true and correct.

    1. If electronic signatures are not used:
    • The driver must print and manually sign the RODS daily.
    • The driver must have in his or her possession the printed and signed RODS for the prior seven consecutive days (if required on those days).
    • The driver should be given an opportunity to print and manually sign the current day’sRODS at the time of the inspection.
    1. If RODS have been electronically signed:
    • At the time of an inspection of records by an enforcement official, the driver may display the current and prior seven days RODS to the official on the device’s screen.
    • If the enforcement official requests printed copies of the RODS, the driver must be given an opportunity to print the current and prior seven days RODS (if required on those days) at the time of inspection.

Guess I’ll get a fine then. They can kiss my ###. I’m not toting around a printer for THEIR convenience when they all have a computer that will accept emailed logs. I already stopped using pen and paper since it’s easier to read electronically. I’m telling you guys, these ridiculous regulations push a guy to the absolute limit some days.

Keep Trucking does offer an ELD compliant option (according to their website). If that's what is being used, no printer required. If it's just the app on the phone, then the printer is required.

Yes, but an ELD will track his true drive times. Can't have that happening.

It is technically impossible to run an ELD in a pre-99 truck.

A portion of the ELD mandate has to do with how a vehicle communicates with an approved ELD device. Since this '93 tractor won't be able to meet those requirements, it will never be in compliance with that device's intended use as per the FMCSA.
