That's right. They close around midnight and reopen around 6 or 7 a.m. That way they don't have to pay a graveyard shift as business is slowing down for them. Do you think it might have been the food, prices and service for part of the reason?

I was at the Flying J in Winchester, Virginia yesterday (August 11, 2009). I asked about the restuarant workers being kicked to the curb and the corporate office bringing in Subways after the merger with Pilot occurs.

The waitress glared at me and said something to the effect of "It's not a merger. Pilot is giving financial help to Flying J. All operations at Flying J's will not change and the restuarants will be staying open".

    Yea ... right

I quit using Flying J's about a month or so after I started driving solo. The two times I ate at them I got rotgut something fierce. Then, tried to scale out at one after picking up a load north of Amarillo, TX, on I40. Sat for about 10 minutes after pushing the button a few times, finally lady come on all rude and yells at me to give her a minute. 5 minutes later, I push the button again, and she screams at me to hold the hell on.

Now, I've sat inside the TA at exit 77 on I81 in Harrisburg, and watched them at their busiest, and they ALWAYS can get to you within a few minutes, even when swamped. Doesn't take but 10 seconds to get you off that scale, and the customers standing in line usually don't mind the slight delay. Sitting for 15 minutes waiting for a scale is ridiculous.

Anyway, I left the J and went down to the TA a few miles down on I40, Haven't been back since. Kind of glad they got bought out by Pilot.

Might be cause they filed for bankruptcy and that Pilot is buying them out and they're calling the shots now.

Hehe, not really. Just got a short fuse when it comes to rude customer service.

The food thing wasn't even that big of an issue, since we certainly get enough of that on the road.

they closed the entire resturant at the Flying J in Casper, Wyo. It was always busy, the only other spot is now a few miles further So. that has even more limited hours.
