NJ. Guys were doing the same thing when I was in. There was a dude I came across who had 100 rentals (apt complex) to his name plus a family farm. He was just about done his 20 and retiring as a comfy E-6. Dude didnt have a care in the world.

They guy with 40 rentals was an E-6 and the other with 5 was an E-5. Both were always on the lookout for more.
One time, the E-6 was working on one of his empty houses, getting it ready to rent. The house next door was owned by someone else, also empty, but not for sale. A guy stopped and ask my E-6 friend how much he'd take for the palm trees in the yard of the other house. He told him, $500 for each tree and you dig them up and haul them away. The guy hired a crew to dig them up that same day. I told him, "You sold trees that aren't even on your property." He said, "The guy didn't ask if they were my trees, just asked how much I'd take for them." He got away with it.

Go to the Union and see what they have in work.

Had a plumbing issue in this building, the company we had to call is Union, they charged $120 an hour, minimal 2 hours because it is commercial plumbing. There were two of them and we talked, the older one asked what the drivers were making and if they are home every night, then laughed when I gave them an answer. These two still beat the hell of being a truck driver. They don't work weekends, they both bring in gross $120k and they have a good pension.

I'm already in the union. I'm a 1st yr apprentice but have been laid off going on 3mos already. Thats why I'm thinking of sticking with trucking and going into heavy haul.

Just wanted to pick your brains and see what dudes with experience would do. I'm trying to hammer down one path to take and stick with it.

Just my opinion but if it were me I would 100% stick with the plumbing business.

Once you get your journey man certificate you could always start your own plumbing company, work the hours you want and come out ahead of any driving job.

If your looking to get into buying properties you will obviously save a lot of money doing any plumbing related work that needs to be done and wont have to hire someone.

Prior to selling my last house in order to get it up to code for the city I had to hire a plumber to come out and install a second sub pump. Had a plumber come out and do all the work himself from jack hammering the floor, laying the pipe, pouring the new concrete, etc etc. Took him all day friday and a half day Saturday and the total cost was $3600. Cheapest bid I could get...

I cannot recommend anyone get into truck driving no matter what they haul. Just cant do it. Truck driving is a bottom of the barrel industry.
