I myself graduated high school, went in the navy, was educated to be an electronics technician, attended some college after leaving the navy, then spent time as an elctro-mechanical technician then several years as an electrician.
After my last layoff I decided that I was tired of the construction life and got my cdl so that I could persue an old dream ... I start my orientation on Aug 10.... can't wait

Sounds exactly like what I did.

I was a thermoforming technician, we made plastic parts for food, like cookie trays, I worked on the tools and the electrical bits inside, I also have HVAC certifications and did that for a while. I HATE working indoors, trucking provides a good outdoors feel, even if Im not OUTDOORS.
Im in it for the money, in this economy I cant afford to get a college education. But I keep my bills paid, buy my toys, and try to have fun. -
both of these are me
my grandpa drove for Pepsi for 47 years and just retired last year and my dad (his son) drove for Coca Cola.....lol kinda funny how that worked out
now im at UPS Freight just starting out, high school diploma only....college aint for me -
I graduated H.S., entered the military, got out and worked in construction for awhile were I got my CDL & then re-entered the military & earned my business degree.
I've held many hat's from entry level warehouse type positions to upper level management positions. I was two rungs on the ole corporate ladder from reaching VP status & I just got burned out on all the politics, etc.
I've just recently got back into driving and I'm really enjoying it. I like working outside, & I enjoy hard work. I don't mind getting dirty or doing what it takes to get the job done. The trucking industry has been very good to me & my family & I can't really think of doing anything else at this point. -
this is a great thread! great stories!!

I have a degree in Radio and TV broadcasting. I volunteered at a Christian Rock radio station for 7ish years...loved it and got that degree.
After a while in school for the radio degree...I decided I didn't want to work multiple jobs as radio doesnt pay well unless you are very good and in a bigger market. so I went into teaching.
Got my teaching degree in 04 and went down to Vegas to teach and get experience to move back to MN. In the summer of 05, the wife was hired up in southern MN, so we moved up there while I worked as a para-professional and at Wal Mart.
Her contract was not renwed, nor was mine. So we started applying all over and got hired in Southern WY. I kinda pissed off a few people there, mainly because I let my frustrations be known about how I was struggling / lack of support.
Wouldn't you know it...I wasn't renewed. So we moved a bit further west in WY in 07. I applied with Watkins / Shep and Schneider. Schneider took me on and I've been on a dedicated route since Oct of 07. I've liked it quite a bit, but now since its been merged into a team route...I'm liking it less. Depending how you look at it, I get paid fairly well to sleep, lol; OR, I get paid very well for driving and working. Either way...I don't like being away for 16 hours a day.
As far as the future...Im applying with the districts in the area...need to work on my cover letter....hard to describe my interest in teaching when I've been out of it for two years and driving a truck, lol. "I'm writing in regards to your open elementary teaching position. Im a truck driver."
That and it sucks where my wife makes more in 9 months than I do in 12. We could do so much more traveling and such in the summer if I was teaching and had that time off. -
Yeah.. BUT.. you're 35 and have been driving for 6 years so unless you sat in a hospital bed since you were out of high school, didn't you technically come from another profession too?
