If it is a Fitzgerald with 530,000 miles, it has A. already been rebuilt, B. they didn’t build the engine or C. it is a fluke. Most of their in house rebuilt engines that fail do so in the 200,000-300,000 mile range.

There can be several reasons to out of frame vs in-frame. I am in early stages of out of framing a Cummins ISM in a quad axle dump truck. Main reason I chose out was rear structure/ flywheel housing was leaking bad. Truck has Allison trans so it is easier to pull motor and leave trans on a stand in chasis. A buddy has an OTC revolver engine stand so going to make doing mains much easier and ISM did have issues with main cap fretting so it will be much easier to check main bearing clearance. Plus, I don't have to climb up a down all the time and easier to keep it clean.

don't know if it was a smoker before being rebuilt but it's real smoker now when its cold, from what I've read hear I think its got the 15/1 pistons

Why are you overhauling it? I am guilty as the rest, but if it has over 500,000 on it and head is coming off I usually overhaul them. Lots of engines are overhauled just for piece of mind. Dad and uncles would overhaul the Cummins back in the day in the drop of a hat, but the could get it done over the weekend and cost less than $2000 with all genuine Cummins parts. Still recall my uncle about falling over when guy charged him $300 to cut all holes for LPF liners. Same guy charges $300 a hole these days!

The reasoning behind my thoughts are do I want to put money into the Fitzgerald motor down the road( hopefully not in the near future, motor is running good) or take a motor that I have that needs rebuilt and do an out of frame on it and know exactly what I have in the motor. After reading everything about the fitz motors I don't have the most confidence in it for the long term
