Should a newbie talk to a school or a trucking company first?

it really doesnt matter as long as you do your research and talk to both.

 

Check around and do some research

 

1. Go to an independent school if at all possible. Yes,you have to come up with the funding yourself, but you are not beholden to any carrier when you finish.

2. Make sure any school you attend is PTDI certified

 

If you already know who you might want to drive for........ then of course!
Why would you want to go to a school just to find out the company you want to work for thinks the school does a lousy job of training.

All schools have closer ties to some companies that others.... but any school will have a placement service that can help you get a job with a dozen or more companies.

Many (if not all) of the larger carriers have a tuition repayment incentive for those who already went through school.... most do not require a contract.... you just get a monthly amount and you get that payment for as many months as you work for them (up to a specified maximum limit.)

Obviously there are positives and negatives about all companies.... but you will find some companies have MORE negatives than most people want to deal with (unless they just plain have to) ....... so do your research here to find out more about the companies you are looking at.

I don't see how it could possibly hurt........

Crete Carriers has a program where you do work in addition to what the school requires. If you absolutely want to work for one of these companies then you should get pre-approved by them before starting. This doesn't mean you can't go it alone and apply to them later. The biggest problem I see is that OTR TRUCKING ISN'T FOR EVERYONE and I wouldn't want to sign any contract until I found out if it was what I really wanted to do. I went into school thinking I wanted to do local trucking and found out OTR was the thing for me.

 

go to a private school youll be alot happier that way it gives you more time to check companies out instead of jumping right in take advice dont be hasty remember the carriers can throw you out any time they want most pvt schools willnot unless you seriuosly deserve it
