I've been real curious about this for awhile. Seems like there are hardliners in both camps. What is your reasoning?
I'll give mine. After just a few months as an O/O I said screw it and quit keeping track of deadhead vs. loaded miles. To be clear, I ALWAYS try to keep my deadhead miles down but I don't really pay much attention to them otherwise. To me, if the truck moves a mile I count my money by that figure. In other words, I just run 'all miles' all the time when thinking of my average. If I just looked at loaded miles I'd be getting rich. Looking at all miles only makes a lot more sense to me.
What do you do and why?
Do you separate loaded and deadhead miles? Why?

You still are on duty working, so deadhead miles count as loaded. Whenever I quote loads, I always count every mile as loaded.
It has sense for big trucking companies who have leased l/o or o/o, to count deadhead and loaded separately, but for a small guy it's all the sameFlat Earth Trucker and BoostedTeg Thank this. -
If you dont track them you have no numbers to work with to try to make your operation more efficient.
