When you p&d drivers leave out in the morning, how far from your terminal might you find yourself on a given day? Do you typically stay in the city your terminal is, or do you cover a larger area? I understand routes and bids are different, so responses can vary widely. I'm just trying to get an idea and understand the job a little better. I am not a driver yet. Thank you in advance.

That's going to vary widely. Some might have routes that cover a few hundred miles while others stay in the city in which their terminal is located.

I figured it would be a pretty broad answer. I usually ask drivers where they are out of when I see them out where I'm stationed. The answer is usually that they came from an hour to an hour and a half away. Although things are pretty spread out here, I always wonder how much ground they generally cover in a day. They must not have many stops to make.

Depends here in the USA in the big cities like where I live, between 50-70 miles a day some routes more and some less.

Thanks for the reply. I am getting a better picture now. Out here in the SW, I suppose it's the opposite and terminals service a much greater area.

Like @ChaoSS said, that will vary greatly depending on who you drive for.

A company with less terminals and has them more spread out will likely have longer peddles with more windshield time.

Runs will vary greatly within the individual terminal as well depending on the area.

My run for example is distinctive in that it has the longest stem time relative to the density of the peddle. It’s all in or around one town. You have about 2 1/4 hours to get down there, and maybe 3 to 3 1/2 hours to run the route. That’s pretty much why I took that run. Momma didn’t raise no fool. They can load it up and I can still knock it out sort of efficiently.

Like today for example, I had 21 stops off by 12:30, but it’s probably the only run we have where you will be able to pull that off, with 3 pickups afterwards and ran about 275 miles by the time all was said and done.

@MACK E-6 21 stops by 1230pm, man what time did you started. How close were the deliveries.

Even within a company, centers can differ vastly in the amount of wheel time.

Our Flagstaff barn covers the entire NE quadrant of Arizona. It wasn't unknown to have >500mi days on the long runs. Or you could put on <20mi and never leave Flag.

The city guy that drives my bid tractor during the day puts on about 250 miles a day. Must be in the country because the tractor is always muddy.
