I wouldn't worry about it too much Rob. You don't necessarily need to know how to rebuild the whole truck or have any desire to do so. In my estimation, you do need to know how to diagnose the truck's problem so you don't get hosed when you take it to them to do the work. It won't necessarily make you a better business owner, or be the best use of your own time in certain situations, to do all the wrenching on your truck, but then again, even that is situationally different from one truck owner to the next according to their own plan. Just my .02.

 

Talked to a guy on the phone that said he never took his pete to the shop for 20 years. He claimed he rebuilt the engine and replaced tires on the side of the road and all that. One of those good ol' boys that couldn't understand how guys can live off of holding a steering wheel for $1.15/mile. Real cowboy, I guess.

I believed him, but he was about 60 years old. I remember thinking "man are you going to retire?" If I pulled in $2k/week from trucking for 20 years, I'd find a reason to stop by that age.

Here now be careful, 60 isn't that old. Some of us are getting very close to that. Dang youngsters anyhow. If I could remember where I put my cane and walker would put a hurt on you.

 

Before you go crazy, vehicle electrical parts have not been returnable for a long time. The reason is they often get fried by what caused the first one to go bad. Ask almost any parts department/seller and they will tell you no returns on electrical parts and switches.

 

The term "Cowboy" can be taken as a compliment or an insult so you should be careful when you call someone that.
If you look at the number of years that a lot of people posting on here have behind the wheel there's a lot with more time than 20 years. As far as sixty being old, depends on the mindset. Lots of old people at fourty and lots of young people at seventy. So, there ya go...

PS: As far as I'm concerned sixty isn't old... LOL

 

My Pops is 78 was diagnosed with a brain tumer when he was 55... I still can't keep up the Ol' Bastid. LOL
