Basically I'm asking if I'm hireable after school. I have a felony from when I was 17 ('93-Assault, but really it was a minor fight) and I believe two misdemeanors from 2000 (reckless driving and possession of marijuana). This was all a long time ago and in the meantime I did a stint in the Navy, who accepted me despite this and even granted me a Secret security clearance.
It just seems like the worse combo to me (felony, drug, reckless driving), I couldn't imagine a worse combo for this industry short of running somebody over. This was all a decade+ ago, and besides these there might just be a couple of minor speeding tickets (all years ago also).
Also, for the past two years after the Navy I've worked for/lived with my brother in law, a contractor, who's paid me in cash, so I don't have any W2s or Social security verification of employment for these years.
Do I even stand a chance on an application? Should I give up my hopes for driving a truck?
Should I even bother going to trucking school given my record?

Hello
I will try to help answer some of your questions:
Most trucking companies use a 5-10 year Motor Vehicle Report (MVR) and possibly a 3-10 year Background Report.
Your Felony should not present a problem.
It will be the Careless Reckless Endangerment Charge that is an eye opener.
In addition any speeding tickets will accentuate the potential as a repeat offender (lead foot).
I really would have to see the report to know for sure.
How many miles above the posted speed limit, was that ticket?
Have you checked w/ any of your local schools for training?
Job placement should always accompany your training. If a school does not offer this assistance, then find one that will.
The school that you attend will/should help you to get pre hires.
There are Grants and Funds available, if you qualify, to help pay for the training.
I can provide a list of potential companies that will work with the criteria that you have provided thus far.
I have some of these companies listed in the Job Seekers section of this site.
I hope that this helps you in your search.

Probably not, based on what I've read on the forums. Once the economy starts rolling again you'll stand a better chance.

I think that it is insane that the same government that gave you a security clearance, created the regulations that have you asking this question. You were highly skilled and qualified to serve, and yet government regs may keep you from a job that they classify as unskilled labor.

In my opinion, the key is where do you live?
1) It's going to be tough, especially in this economy. But let's put it this way: You have a better chance at getting a driving job than Gary Coleman has of making the NBA. Sorry, i couldn't think of another analogy. -
companies are very particular right now, personally with your record, I'd not to be runnin with you, you made your bed, in this industry it means everything, maybe when the economy picks back up, you might have a chance in the lower unit of the universe to drive for some co that will use and abuse you, but right now, i'd save your money

Since this isn't very recent, I don't think this would pose much of a problem with a company like Swift.

IMHO I don't think you stand a chance in today's truck driving industry. Maybe when or if the jobs get plentiful and they take everyone that applies. I also do not believe you on your past history. If you had a felony prior to your navy service how did you get the waiver approved? Plus having a felony and a drug charge the chances of getting a security clearance are slim to none. Sorry.
