"Really, I am not a panhandler" ...
"Then why are you asking me for money"?

A woman said that she needed money to get her daughter to a doctor's appointment. I said NO. She jumped into a van and I heard her talking on her cell phone declare that she did not feel this was a good place to get money.

"Can you spare some change? It's for a good cause"
"NO".
Then I noticed that this was organized, that there were four people working each side of the intersection on Constitution Avenue, NW. They held out buckets for people to drop money into. I guess drivers thought that this was for some legitimate cause.
What kind of scams are going around truck stops?

Had a guy approach me in Atlanta, asking for a handout.
I pointed to the side of the truck, "you see this? Do you know what this stands for?"
"Poor Axx Motherxxxxxx!"
He laughed as he walked off. -
Most of the time I tell them the same kind of sob story they tell me.
Not give them money. Some will take you up on the offer, some will not.
I've bought for a couple of guys that were really really grateful.The Challenger and BulletTooth Thank this. -
I just tell them that if I had any money... I sure the hell wouldn't be in the truck stop parking lot.
The biggest scam of all.... And we all are victim! Go inside any major national chain truck stop. Pick a item up off the shelf... And look at the price. Walmart sells the same thing at a 1/3 of the price... But that's right... Walmart is doing away with truck parking for shoppers because some nasty drivers toss their trash & piss bottles on the ground... So we end up paying the inflated price as a convenience fee.Bigdaddy00, simplyred1962 and LooneyTune Thank this. -
Biggest Scam of All - If you can, pull into your favorite truck stop and use your GPS to search for the lowest priced diesel fuel in the area. 9.5 out of 10 times the truck stop you're in won't even make it into the top 20 lowest price. My experience shows that normal mark up by truck stops is usually about 25 cents per gallon over the lowest local price. Let's do the math, 25 cents x 200 gallons = 50 bucks per fill up x 3 fills per week = 150 bucks per week x 50 weeks per year = $7,500 per year mark up over the best available price in the area. Let's say that for laughs a truck stop averages 15 fill ups per hour x 24 hours a day... and truck stops say that they don't make any money......

I just say, "I hear the same stories everyday and I never give." and they always give 2 expressions;
First, a look of shock that you don't believe them,
Second, a slight look of anger.
Always.Last edited: Aug 3, 2009

So you think the truckstops are a rippoff?
Yes, truckstops charge more than the corner gas station;
1. They have multi-million dollar parking lots and sometimes they even repair them. We park in one every night, fuel or no fuel.
2. They give free showers with hot water, a clean towel, (hopefully.) And pay somebody to clean them.
3. They let us throw away our trash. Lots and lots of it. (Wonder how much one ts spends on trash removal.)
4. There is, no doubt, a ton of stuff stolen from them.
5. Walmart is always cheaper than anybody, that's there system and their agenda. (Wish Walmarts had truck stops.)
So, I appreciate truckstops soooo much. And yes, I've gotten mad and even reported stuff to managers etc. But, we should be happy. Remember the 70s.Last edited: Aug 3, 2009
