My understanding is its a federal regulation not a state thing. And the way i understand the law is that a shop building a glider can only build a certain amount each year and i believe they have to go thru a legal process to even be able to build them . i could be completely wrong but that is what it looks like in the writing. The manufacturers build the glider kits and truck companies buy them and they ship them with a special vin number to the shops that do the engine work. Just dropping an old engine in a new truck does not make it a glider or legal for that matter if i am reading the writing correctly
Would you drive for a small company that advertises their non-eld glider kit trucks?

I'm not understanding how your buddy converted an old truck with old motor to glider status.
Or why he'd even bother. What would be the reasoning?
But I"m talking about ordering and building. The truck would be new with a pre emissions (old) motor.
To which the gooberment is cracking down on. I'm not up to date on the latest rules. -
It’s not up to the state. If it’s a glider it’s in the VIN. The 2017 KW I drove had GL in the VIN.
The likelihood of a one man show getting caught repowering a truck is low, and I don’t blame them for doing it. But it is illegal to go backwards with emissions if your truck is 04 or newer.Brandonpdx, D.Tibbitt and MagicMan22 Thank this. -
Pretty sure the magic phrase there was “04 or newer”. Which mine is below 04. But what do I know...I’m just a ####### truck driver

Yeah this was 5 years ago. The state did his. He pretty much had nothing to do with it. As a matter of fact he was quiet upset at the time. He was afraid it’d hurt his resale. Guess 2 dumb ole truckers in Tennessee just got lucky. Well me anyway, his didn’t matter

Yes, because that is when the emission stuff began. Before that you could pretty much repower with whatever you wanted.MagicMan22 Thanks this.

Thank you. And that is what I was referring to when I originally posted about it. Didn’t mean to start a CARB or emissions war here. Lol. Or ruffle feathers that I was in a glider and you’re not kinda thing. Was just stating facts as it pertains to my individual situation.
Long FLD Thanks this. -
And if I were the OP I’d stop and visit with these guys. Gliders don’t mean running illegal. Maybe they have a good shop and their own mechanics that can work on the older engines. Shoot I did something blasphemous, I drove an exempt glider that had an ELD in it.
D.Tibbitt Thanks this. -
I would definitely check them out. I would much rather work for real people, not a bunch of computer jockeys, climbing the ladder, building their resume. Fresh out of College. Know what I mean, Dude?, Cool! , That’s great!!!
MagicMan22, D.Tibbitt and snowwy Thank this. -
Try it out, pre emission motors seldom kick engine codes, no pumping def is a great thing.starmac and MagicMan22 Thank this.
