Would someone please give me a crash coarse, step my step, I dont understand when to use the range selector switch, and the splitter control button?

For a 13 speed, gears 1 thru 5, range button down, splitter in direct. Gear 6, range button up, splitter in direct, Gear seven, splitter in overdrive, gear 8, move stick and splitter back to direct. Keep repeating thereafter.
